HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison lacrosse matched its highest scoring game as a Division I program, and 14 different players found the back of the net to lead the Dukes past George Washington 23-7 on Tuesday afternoon at Sentara Park.
Â
The Dukes won for the second straight outing, improving to 4-1 on the year, while the Colonials fell to 3-2.
Â
The 23 goals were tied for the most goals JMU has scored in a Division I game and the most all-time in a home game. The Dukes also scored 23 in 2007 at Virginia Tech and in 2000 at American.
Â
A total of 14 players scored in the win, led by hat tricks from Rachel Matey, Kacey Knobloch and Isabella Peterson. Matey scored a career-high five points off three goals and two assists while winning three draw controls. Knobloch also tied her career high with three goals to go with her two assists, and Peterson had three tallies and one helper.
Â
Three other Dukes recorded two goals in Lizzy Fox, Taylor Marchetti and Elizabeth Murphy. Katelyn Morgan scored a goal with three assists, and Ava Frantz added a goal and two helpers.
Â
On the defensive end, Molly Dougherty made six saves, all in the first half, to pick up her third win between the pipes. Emma Johnson and Fox had a pair of caused turnovers each, while Marchetti and Knobloch both collected two ground balls.
Â
The Dukes opened the game scoring the first six goals just over 13 minutes in. They led by as many as nine in the first half, taking a 13-5 lead at the break. JMU scored the first four goals of the second half to activate the running clock and never led by less than 10 the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
QUOTING COACH SHELLEY KLAES
"I think this is a young JMU squad that doesn't even realize how good it can be yet. Obviously we're finding some confidence on the attacking end in the last two games, coming off of Elon. That's what good programs expect. They expect to see their programs respond to an uncharacteristic loss. That's what we're seeing with this squad. Today showed how team oriented JMU is. They're unselfish and they like to make each other look good. That's a great recipe when building confidence in our attack unit."

JMU returns to action on Sunday, March 21 when it travels south to Chapel Hill, N.C., to battle #1 North Carolina. The opening draw is set for 3 p.m. at Dorrance Field and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
