WALLACE, N.C. - The James Madison women's golf team rewrote the program record books on Tuesday afternoon, breaking or tying every individual and team record available as they climbed into a fourth-place finish at the River Landing Classic, hosted by UNCW at the par-72, 5,960-yard River Landing Golf Club.
The Dukes, who first had to complete their second round after seeing it suspended due to darkness on Monday evening, closed that loop in fine form, carding an even-par 288 to climb one spot in to sixth at the 13-team event. The effort already marked the second-best round in program history, sitting just one stroke off the record.
JMU quickly bettered that mark in the third round, erupting for a final-round 277 (-11) that shattered the previous school record by 10 strokes and vaulted the Dukes to their fourth-place finish. The performance was the first round in program history that saw all four JMU scorers shoot under par.
Their final score of 858 (-6) also lapped the program's 54-hole record by 14 strokes.
Freshmen
Kendall Turner and
Amelia Williams led the historic effort with record-setting performances of their own on the week. Turner improved upon her opening round with back-to-back career-best rounds of 69 (-3), finishing the week tied for fourth among 72 players and setting the Dukes' new 54-hole individual record to-par of 208 (-8) along the way.
After a difficult second round, Williams carded the best round of her young collegiate career, posting a bogey-free 68 (-4) to cap the week that moved her into a tie for ninth and matched the program's lowest-ever single round.
Sophomore
Kate Owens closed her week with back-to-back stellar rounds, shooting 72 (E) and 69 (-3) to vault into a tie for 11th, while freshman
Ana Tsiros came up with a stellar bounceback day, matching and then breaking her career low with a second-round 72 (E) and final-round 71 (-1) that tied her for 36th.
Sophomore
Carly Lyvers posted consecutive final rounds of 77 (+5) to close out the JMU scoring in a tie for 52nd, while freshman
Taylor Miano, playing as an individual, closed with 79-78 to take 56th with a final score of 234.
QUOTING COACH BAKER
"Obviously, this was just an outstanding day for us. For Amelia and Kendall to set new records was great to see, but I'm sure they're both even happier about the team records set today. It's a testament to the team's perseverance to have a week like this after a tough start to the year, but we know that we need to keep working and keep building off this."
