Second-Inning Explosion Propels JMU Past UNCW 10-3

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison softball erupted for nine runs in the second inning to cruise past UNCW in the opener of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.

JMU improved its league-best mark to 25-1 overall and 12-1 in the CAA. UNCW fell to 13-19 overall, 7-6 in the conference.
Logan Newton led off the damage in the bottom of the second with a solo home run before Emily Phillips and Kate Gordon added three-run shots to stake JMU to a 7-0 lead before the first out of the inning. Newton added a second RBI in the inning on a sacrifice fly and Lynsey Meeks contributed an RBI single for the 9-0 lead.

Odicci Alexander surrendered just two hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of work to improve to 6-0. UNCW posted its three runs in the fifth with Alexendar lifted before she re-entered to shut the door on the 10-3 victory.

Phillips finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Alexender also had a pair of hits in the contest. Eight other Dukes had a hit apiece with Gordon leading all JMU batters with four RBIs while recording her 60th career home run. Madison Naujokas recorded one steal in the game putting her at 50 careers steals.

UNCW's Camryn Dean had a three-run home run in the fifth to account for the only runs for the Seahawks.
