CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – James Madison continues its road through the 2021 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship with a second-round matchup against top-seeded North Carolina on Sunday, May 16 in Chapel Hill.
The opening draw is slated for a noon start at Dorrance Field and will be streamed live on ESPN3.

This is the second meeting of the season between the teams and the second all-time in the NCAA Tournament. JMU beat the Tar Heels 15-12 in the 2018 semifinals.

The winner of JMU and North Carolina advances to next week's NCAA Quarterfinals to face the winner of Stony Brook and Rutgers. That game will be played on either May 22 or 23.

JMU'S HISTORY WITH THE HEELS
- Sunday marks the 14th meeting between the Dukes and Tar Heels, with UNC leading 9-4.
- Earlier this season, UNC pulled away late for a 15-5 win back on March 21 to win its third straight in the series.
- JMU is 1-6 all-time in games played in Chapel Hill, winning an 8-7 overtime bout back on March 2, 1999.
- Prior to UNC's current three-game series win streak, JMU won both 2018 games, taking a 15-14 overtime win in the season opener and later downing the Heels 15-12 in the national semifinals in Stony Brook, N.Y.
- UNC has never ranked lower than #6 in any meeting and this will be the third time JMU has faced a top-ranked Tar Heel squad.

JMU IN THE NCAA TOURNEY
- JMU is embarking on its 17th appearance all-time in the NCAA Championship, which includes a program-record sixth consecutive appearance.
- The Dukes are 13-15 all-time in the tournament. They are 8-3 at home, 1-8 away and 4-4 in neutral-site games.
- JMU has produced a victory now in 10 of its 17 berths in the NCAA Championship.
- Friday's win marked the Dukes' first tournament win against a Big Ten foe. It was also JMU's first NCAA victory in the state of North Carolina in four tries, going 0-3 previously in Durham.
- JMU is just three years removed from capturing its first national championship, as it beat Virginia, Florida, North Carolina and Boston College on its way to the title.Â
HAGGERTY, DEFENSE PROPEL DUKES INTO NEXT ROUND
- Charlotte Haggerty registered a career-high four goals and a stifling defensive effort pushed JMU to a 9-6 victory against Johns Hopkins in Friday's NCAA first round.
- The Dukes built a five-goal lead in the first and led by as many as six down the stretch.
- JMU's defense limited JHU to only three goals through the first 56+ minutes, due in large to 10 caused turnovers resulting in 21 Johns Hopkins turnovers.
- Molly Dougherty made six of her seven saves in the second half. Emma Johnson had three caused turnovers and a career-high five ground balls, while Mairead Durkin caused four turnovers with three ground balls.
- It was JMU's second NCAA win against Hopkins, and the six goals was tied for the second fewest allowed in JMU's NCAA Championship history.
