HARRISONBURG, Va. - Assistant coach
Andrew Wilson of the James Madison men's basketball team has been selected to participate in the prestigious 2021 TopConnect Basketball Virtual Symposium, the organization announced on Monday.
Â
The event, taking place this week on August 17-18, is in its fourth year as TopConnect (formerly Villa 7) continues to identify top assistant basketball coaches in the country. TopConnect develops educational programming that allows these coaches to hear from a wide variety of successful leaders and speakers.
Â
Since joining head coach
Mark Byington prior to last season, Wilson has made an immediate impact in Harrisonburg, helping lead JMU to its ninth-ever Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship as the Dukes improved from 9-21 in 2019-20 to a 13-7 mark in 20-21.
Â
Wilson, the Dukes' defensive coordinator, was responsible for one of the most improved defensive turnarounds in the country in his first season at JMU. The Dukes finished in the top 100 nationally in five different major defensive statistical categories (FG%, 3pt%, TO%, Steals, & Points Per Possession) in 20-21, after finishing outside of the top 300 nationally the year before his arrival. The Dukes' defense also led the CAA in all five aforementioned statistical categories.
Â
TopConnect continues to pave the way in development of the next generation of leaders in college athletics. Since its inception in 2018, seventeen attendees have been hired as Athletic Director, Head Men's Basketball Coach or Head Women's Basketball Coach.Â
Â
The Dukes, who addedÂ
incoming freshmen Andrew McConnell, Devon Savage and Jaylen Stinson to the 2021-22 roster in November andÂ
a quartet of transfers earlier this offseason, will return four starters from the 2020-21 roster that captured the CAA regular season title.
