JMU Athletics Offers Student Learning & Employment Opportunities

James Madison Athletics strives to be part of the learning environment of the institution by providing students the opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and abilities that will aid their future pursuits. The department also relies on students – paid, volunteer and for credit (practicum) – in order to meet multiple needs across all units. Due to various factors largely pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic, many offices within JMU Athletics have a greater need than usual to fill vacant student roles.

Academic Tutors (Student-Athlete Services)

Student-Athlete Services hires JMU students as paid tutors to assist JMU student-athletes across many courses.

Broadcast Services

JMU Athletics has modified aspects of its broadcast operations for 2021-22 and, as a result, has more opportunities than ever for students to get involved in live production, particularly behind the scenes as producer or camera operator. Immediate need is volunteers and practicums, though paid opportunities may be available.

Communications

Paid, practicum and volunteer students are needed to assist staff with promoting the achievements of JMU student-athletes and our 18 sport programs on social media, web, traditional media and more.

Compliance

Practicum students in compliance assist with efforts to ensure that JMU Athletics (coaches, staff & student-athletes) operate within the rules and regulations of intercollegiate athletics.

Creative Services (Graphic Design & Digital Content)

Paid, practicum and volunteer students are needed either 1) who can assist in planning and executing creative social media content across all official JMU Athletics handles or 2) who are familiar with Adobe Creative Cloud applications and possess some degree of graphic design experience to help with graphic content creation.

Duke Club

The JMU Duke Club, the fundraising arm of JMU Athletics, uses a combination of practicum and intern students each semester. Fall 2021 positions are full, but there are still Spring 2022 opportunities at this time.

Fan Engagement (Marketing)

The JMU Athletics Fan Engagement unit facilitates a positive game day experience at competitive events via promotional items, fan activations, public address scripting, video board planning (where applicable) and more. The unit uses a combination of paid, practicum and volunteer students.

Facilities & Events

JMU Athletics hires Building Managers and other student assistants to help manage JMU's state-of-the-art competitive and training venues. Additional student support is also needed for facility conversions at the Atlantic Union Bank Center (moving the floor and other setup needs for various events). A combination of paid, practicum and volunteer student support is needed for these roles.

JMU Sports Properties (LEARFIELD)

JMU Sports Properties is the multimedia rights holder of JMU Athletics as part of the national LEARFIELD brand. Interns are needed to assist with game day partner activations at football and basketball as well as in the office to assist with data collection, partner newsletters, staff meetings, Purple Patrol events and any other student-focused sponsored content.

Nutrition

Sports nutrition has openings for three paid students to assist with all efforts to provide nutrition resources to JMU student-athletes to aid performance enhancement.

Photography

Paid, practicum and volunteer students assist the photography supervisor with live sports photography capture of all 18 sport programs at JMU as well as office processing and organization of photos for departmental use.

Team Managers

The Dukes Student Team Manager Program is offered to those students interested in sports administration, intercollegiate athletics, or coaching. This program offers graduated stipends based on the level of support as a Student Team Manager that is paid per semester.

Ticket Office

The Athletic Ticket Office is seeking volunteers to assist with football and basketball game days. Duties may include facilitating player pass lists, assisting guests with accessing mobile tickets, and providing exceptional customer service.

Video Board Production Assistants

Paid positions for football and basketball game days and more! Get to be part of the "behind the scenes magic" that brings the video board to life at our games. Positions vary from camera operator, graphics operator, replay operator and there's room for growth into director and assistant producer roles.

Creative video is a constantly evolving and growing need as digital content is key to promoting the 18 JMU Athletics sport programs. Paid, practicum and volunteer students help with video capture at events and in studio or interview settings, logging and sorting footage and editing for publication.
