NEWARK, Del. – James Madison completed a weekend sweep with a 3-2 (23-25, 27-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-
8) victory Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Dukes have now won 10 of their last 12
matches against the Blue Hens.
JMU improves to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in league play, while Delaware falls to 5-6 on the season and 0-2 in
CAA play.
Sophomore
Miëtte Veldman secured a double-double with a team-high 17 kills and 11 digs. Freshman
Jaydyn Clemmer had a game-high 19 digs and junior
Caroline Dozier finished with 45 of the Dukes' 50
assists.
This was the first time JMU played consecutive five-set matches since playing three straight between
Oct. 1-9, 2017. Today's match was the second time this season JMU won a match after losing the first
set, as the Dukes came back against High Point on Aug. 27.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
JMU jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but Delaware came back and led 12-10 after a 6-0 run. With the
set tied at 19, the Blue Hens scored five of six points to take a 24-20 lead, and eventually won the set on
their fourth opportunity, 25-23.
Second Set
JMU once again held the early lead, taking a 12-9 on a block by Dozier and junior
Sophia Davis. Delaware
produced three 3-0 runs after that point and had set point at 24-23, but the Dukes scored four of the
final five points of the set to win 27-25. Junior
Chloe Wilmoth produced the final two kills of the set, and
tied the match 1-1.
Third Set
The Dukes took an 11-7 lead before Delaware rattled off six straight points to go up 13-11. The Blue
Hens would not relinquish this lead until JMU posted a 3-0 run to take a 23-22 advantage. Up 24-23
following a UD attacking error, Dozier and Davis combined for the block to give the Dukes a 25-23 win
and a 2-1 match advantage.
Fourth Set
Delaware grabbed the early momentum and did not trail until JMU grabbed a 14-13 lead on a Sophia
Davis solo block. After scoring seven of eight to take a 23-19 lead, the Dukes looked as if they would ride
that momentum to victory, but the Blue Hens responded with six straight points to win the set 25-23,
and tie the match 2-2.
Fifth Set
The final set was the only set in which a team won by more than two points. James Madison took a 5-2
lead with a 4-0 run, and extended the lead to 13-4 with a 6-0 run capped by three straight Veldman kills.
Delaware scored four straight to cut its deficit to 13-8, but another Veldman kill and a UD attack error
secured a 15-8 victory for the Dukes.
