Julia McNeley and
Sophie Davis led James Madison in their 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-18, 25-17) volleyball victory over Coastal Carolina in the battle for first place in the Sun Belt East Division on Thursday evening at Godwin Hall.

The Dukes improved to 14-4 (8-1 SBC) while the Chanticleers fell to 15-7 (7-2 SBC).

McNeley tied her career high of seven aces, getting two aces to end the match in set four. Davis had a hitting percentage of .581 with 19 kills.
Annie Smith led the team with five blocks while
Caroline Dozier recorded 40 assists.

Coastal Carolina led the conference in aces prior to this match, but JMU held them to four aces and tallied 13 of their own. Though the Dukes won, the Chanticleers out hit them .316 to .278.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
The Dukes got off to an early 9-5 lead, but a 4-0 run allowed them to catch up 13-14. JMU took back a large lead with a 5-0 run and maintained the lead to win the set.

Second Set
Coastal Carolina took an early 8-1 lead and held it with a pair of 4-0 runs to even out the match.

Third Set
The third set started off with the Dukes up 5-1 but the Chanticleers caught up to an even 8-8 score. The teams stayed even until a 3-0 and 4-0 run set the Dukes apart to give them the advantage in the match.

Fourth Set
In a balanced fourth set, a 5-1 run from JMU gave them a 19-13 edge. A final 3-0 run sealed with the two aces from McNeley won the had fought match for the Dukes.

The Dukes are set to take on the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina on Friday at 6 p.m. to wrap up the weekend conference series. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
