QUICK HITS
- After a pair of one-sided victories in Harrisonburg to open its 2022-23 campaign, James Madison men's basketball hits the road for the first game of a lengthy, six-game road trip on Saturday afternoon, traveling north to Buffalo for a 1 p.m. matchup.
- The Dukes opened the year with a 123-38 victory over Valley Forge on Monday, then followed that with a second romp at the Atlantic Union Bank Center, rolling to a 106-58 win over Hampton on Wednesday night.
- The Dukes have spread points around in both contests, with nine different players combining to rack up 11 double-digit scoring performances across just two games.
- After freshman Jerell Roberson posted a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) in his first collegiate game on Monday, sophomore Terrence Edwards picked up his own on Wednesday, erupting for 21 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in the first half against Hampton before finishing with a 21-11-5 line in 22 minutes.
- Freshman Xavier Brown tallied seven assists on Wednesday, stuffing the stat sheet alongside six points and four boards.
- Redshirt sophomore Justin Amadi began the season as JMU's leading returning rebounder (5.4/game in 21-22) and also with two of the top five single-season field goal percentages in program history - 69.5% in 2020-21 (first) and 64.0% in 2021-22 (fifth). Already this year, he has hit nine of his 11 shots for an 81.8% clip from the floor.
- The Dukes have experience up and down the roster - before his 2021-22 season was cut short due to injury, graduate transfer Takal Molson made quite an impact with 12.3 points per game, 5.2 rebounds per game and 29 total steals last year. He returns to his hometown of Buffalo this weekend leading the Dukes in scoring at 17.0 points per game. In his first collegiate game as a freshman at Canisius, he racked up 25 points against the hometown Bulls, hitting nine of his 13 shots and three of five three-pointers.
- JMU's roster has been bolstered by transfers Noah Freidel and Mezie Offurum, both of whom started on Monday. Freidel comes in as a sharpshooter out of South Dakota State, with 13.6 points per game and a .392 three-point clip in three seasons with the Jackrabbits. Offurum averaged 11.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game on a .459 shooting percentage with Mount St. Mary's last year.
SCOUTING THE BULLS
- Saturday will mark Buffalo's second game of the season, after the Bulls downed preseason Patriot League favorite Colgate in an 88-87 thriller on Monday to open their season with a 1-0 mark.
- Buffalo, which was picked to finish sixth in the MAC, enters the 2022-23 campaign with nine newcomers to its roster.
