HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison tied the game at 58 points apiece with 13 seconds left, however Maine made a physical layup with 0.4 remaining to give the Black Bears a 60-58 victory Monday night inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
JMU begins the season 0-1 but will have an opportunity to bounce back against Millersville on Wednesday, Nov. 7. Maine kicks off its 2022-23 campaign 1-0 and will face UMass next Monday, Nov. 14.
Senior guard
Kiki Jefferson recorded the 12th double-double of her career, posting 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Junior
Kseniia Kozlova also scored a career-high 10 points and pulled down five boards. Graduate student
Caroline Germond was an efficient 4-of-7 (57.1%) from the field for eight points and dished out a pair of assists.
How It Happened
- The Dukes set the tone early, jumping out to a 6-2 lead in the opening minutes and forcing a shot-clock violation on Maine's first possession.
- James Madison led by as many as seven during the second quarter, but the Black Bears hit the last three shots of the first half to make it a 27-24 game with JMU in front.
- Germond, Jefferson, and Kozlova all registered six points to lead the Dukes at halftime.
- Both teams traded baskets in the third quarter, with Maine taking the lead for the first time with 2:51 on the clock. The Black Bears held on to their advantage, a 39-38 edge at the end of the quarter.
- The Dukes fought back to retake the lead, 45-42, before Maine went on a 10-2 run to make it 52-47 at the 4:32 mark.
- Jefferson scored 14 points, while Kozlova made two clutch free throws to tie the game 58-58 with 13 seconds remaining.
- On an in-bound play, the Black Bears were able to make a physical layup with .04 left on the clock for what proved to be the deciding basket.

- JMU held the advantage in field goal percentage (43.5% to 40.3%), free throw percentage. (73.3% to 66.7%), rebounds (35 to 30), and points in the paint (30 to 28).
- Jefferson scored 14 of her 23 points in the final quarter on 5-of-7 (71.4%) shooting, including one three-pointer and sinking 3-of-3 from the line. Additionally, the guard registered a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds. The performance is the 12th double-double of her career.
- Junior Peyton McDaniel knocked down a three-pointer in the first quarter, her first field goal since March 12, 2021, versus Drexel.
- Sean O'Regan is 4-3 in home openers as head coach for the Dukes.
