Lacrosse Drops Opener To No. 2 North Carolina

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison Lacrosse fell by a score of 15-8 to second-ranked North Carolina at Sentara Park on Saturday.
The Dukes fell to 0-1 on the season, as the Tar Heels (1-0) took their fifth consecutive game in the series.

Redshirt freshman Maggie Clark scored a pair of goals in her first career game to lead JMU, while six others scored once. Redshirt senior Molly Dougherty made 15 saves, the fifth time she has stopped 15 shots or more in a game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – North Carolina 3, James Madison 2
Redshirt junior Rachel Matey opened the scoring as the Dukes kept UNC off the scoreboard for the first six minutes. The Tar Heels then put away three consecutive goals before Clark scored her first career tally at the 2:35 mark.
Second Quarter – North Carolina 6, James Madison 3
The Tar Heels extended their advantage with goals 1:30 apart, adding another at the 2:43 mark to take a 6-2 lead, as JMU committed 11 fouls during the period. Junior Tai Jankowski scored with 16 seconds to play to close the gap to three.
Third Quarter – North Carolina 10, James Madison 5
UNC scored three times in the first 4:29 of the quarter, before goals by Clark and redshirt junior Kacey Knobloch put the Dukes back within four. The Tar Heels added a final-minute goal to extend the lead to 10-5.

Fourth Quarter – North Carolina 15, James Madison 8
Sophomore Katelyn Morgan scored 55 seconds into the quarter, before the Tar Heels added three more goals to extend the lead to seven. Both teams added two more goals before the end of the game.
