Dukes Fall Late To Virginia Tech

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison lacrosse dropped a back-and-forth contest to Virginia Tech, falling to the Hokies 10-9 at Sentara Park on Wednesday.
The Dukes fell to 0-2 on the season, while the Hokies picked up their first win of the year to improve to 1-1.

Redshirt sophomore Isabella Peterson led all players with four goals on seven shots. She added nine draw controls to lead all players, contributing to a 16-7 JMU draw control advantage. Redshirt junior Mairead Durkin caused three turnovers for the second straight game, while fellow defender Rachel Matey led with three ground balls.

This was Virginia Tech's first win in the series after 18 consecutive JMU victories.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – Virginia Tech 2, James Madison 2
The Dukes scored the first two goals of the game and held the Hokies off the scoreboard for over 10 minutes. Virginia Tech tied the game with 41 seconds to play in the period.
Second Quarter – James Madison 6, Virginia Tech 4
Peterson put away her second of the game to give the Dukes a 3-2 advantage before the Hokies rallied to take a 4-3 lead. However, three goals in a span of 1:28 by Peterson, junior Tai Jankowski, and redshirt freshman Olivia Mattis put the Dukes in front going into halftime. Mattis' goal was the first of her career. JMU outdrew Virginia Tech 7-0 in the quarter and finished the half with an 11-1 draw control advantage.
Third Quarter – James Madison 8, Virginia Tech 7
With the Dukes up 7-5, Virginia Tech scored a pair of goals in 2:45 to tie the game at seven. Redshirt junior Lizzy Fox broke the tie just 21 seconds later, as the Dukes carried the lead going into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter – Virginia Tech 10, James Madison 9
Redshirt sophomore Taylor Marchetti scored with 12:06 to play to give the Dukes a 9-7 advantage. However, Virginia Tech then scored three straight times, tying the game with 3:25 to play and putting away the winner with 2:02 left.

The Dukes will head to the US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md. and take on No. 23 UConn in a neutral-site contest on Saturday, Feb. 19.
