Peterson’s Six Goals Power Dukes Past UConn

SPARKS, Md. – James Madison lacrosse picked up its first win of the season, erasing an early deficit to defeat No. 23 UConn 13-7 on Saturday.
The Dukes improved to 1-2 on the season while the Huskies dropped to 1-1.
Redshirt sophomore Isabella Peterson of Sparks, Md. scored six goals while being cheered on by her hometown crowd. She reached the six-goal mark for the third time in her career and notched her eighth hat trick in her last 10 games. Redshirt junior Kacey Knobloch also added a hat trick, while redshirt senior Katie Checkosky totaled three assists.
Sophomore Carolyn Thistlewaite collected a career-high four ground balls and redshirt junior Mairead Durkin caused four turnovers, tying a career-high.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – James Madison 3, UConn 3
UConn scored the first three goals of the game in the first four minutes and 41 seconds. However, the Dukes controlled the period the rest of the way, tying the game with two goals by Peterson and one from Knobloch.
Second Quarter – James Madison 7, UConn 5
With the score tied at four, the Dukes netted three goals in two and a half minutes to take a 7-4 lead late in the period, with two of the three coming from Peterson. UConn scored in the final seconds to cut the lead to two at the half. The first half ended as the highest-scoring half for JMU this season.
Third Quarter – James Madison 11, UConn 5
Molly Dougherty made a pair of saves in the quarter to hold the Huskies off the scoreboard, while the Dukes extended the lead to six with goals from Knobloch, redshirt junior Lizzy Fox, and two more from Peterson. This was the first quarter that the Dukes shutout their opponent this season.
Fourth Quarter – James Madison 13, UConn 7
UConn brought themselves within four at the 9:56 mark, but the Huskies would not score again. JMU ended the game with junior Tai Jankowski scoring for the third-straight game and Knobloch secured her hat trick.
