Dukes Surge Past Richmond At Home

HARRISONBURG, Va. – #21 James Madison lacrosse took a big first-half lead and held on to defeat in-state foe #19 Richmond 13-10 at Sentara Park on Wednesday.
The Dukes evened their record at 4-4 on the season, while the Spiders dropped their second straight, falling to 5-2.
Redshirt sophomore Isabella Peterson and senior midfielder Ava Frantz each netted hat tricks, with Frantz's being the first of her career. Redshirt junior Mairead Durkin caused a career-high five turnovers, marking multiple caused turnovers in JMU's first eight games. Goalkeeper Molly Dougherty added nine saves in the win, passing Chris Bauer for the fourth-most career saves in JMU history.
Richmond is the second opponent ranked in the ILWomen/IWLCA Division I Poll the Dukes have defeated thus far, as they also defeated #23 UConn back on Feb. 19.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – James Madison 4, Richmond 1
After the Spiders scored in the opening minute, the Dukes took charge and built a 4-1 lead from four different goal scorers. JMU outshot Richmond 13-5 in the period.
Second Quarter – James Madison 8, Richmond 1
The Dukes once again put up four goals from four different sticks in the period. JMU had built up a 7-1 lead by the 10:34 mark and put away the eighth goal with just 24 seconds to play. The Dukes held their fourth opponent scoreless in a quarter this season, with each instance coming in a win.
Third Quarter – James Madison 11, Richmond 8
The two sides traded three-goal runs, with Richmond scoring three in the first 3:04 of the period before JMU responded with three in 2:56. Frantz's goal to end the JMU run finished off her hat trick. Less than a minute later, Richmond began another run of three goals over 1:27 before adding another late in the period to cut the JMU lead to 11-8. The seven UR goals were the most JMU has allowed to an opponent in a quarter this season.
Fourth Quarter – James Madison 13, Richmond 10
The two sides traded goals, ensuring Richmond never got closer than three. Peterson's goal in the quarter notched her fifth hat trick of the season. The Dukes also outdrew the Spiders 4-0 in the period.
