Lacrosse Pulls Off Road Victory At Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – #21 James Madison lacrosse used several key offensive performances to defeat #14 Virginia 16-14 at Klöckner Stadium on Sunday.
The Dukes moved back above .500 at 5-4, while Virginia fell to 5-6 on the season.

Redshirt sophomore Isabella Peterson scored six goals for the fourth time in her career on a .857 shooting percentage. Redshirt junior Kacey Knobloch and sophomore Katelyn Morgan each added hat tricks, marking the first time this season three JMU players have recorded three or more goals in the same game.

The Dukes picked up their second win in Charlottesville since 2010, with the other victory coming on April 18, 2018.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – James Madison 8, Virginia 2
JMU exploded for its most goals in a quarter this season. A trio of Dukes – Knobloch, Peterson, and redshirt sophomore Taylor Marchetti each scored two goals in the quarter. The Dukes outshot the Cavaliers 12-5 in the period and outdrew them 8-3.
Second Quarter – James Madison 10, Virginia 8
The Cavaliers rallied with three straight goals to open the period and closed to 10-8 with 2:40 remaining. Virginia dominated on the draw in the quarter, winning controls 9-0 and forcing the Dukes to commit 15 fouls.
Third Quarter – James Madison 13, Virginia 9
JMU regained a five-goal advantage by the 6:46 mark with goals by senior Ava Frantz and two more by Peterson. Virginia was only able to get a single goal in the quarter and only grabbed two draws. JMU was a perfect 5-for-5 in clears in the period.

Fourth Quarter – James Madison 16, Virginia 14
A 3-0 JMU run completed by sophomore Katelyn Morgan's hat trick goal gave the Dukes their biggest lead of the game, at 16-9, with 9:10 to play. The Cavaliers responded with four of their own in 1:44 to get within three at the 4:54 mark. Virginia drew closer with 1:51 to play, but were held off the scoreboard with a save in the final minute.

The Dukes will remain on the road against another powerhouse foe, heading to College Park, Md., on Saturday, March 26 to take on #4 Maryland at 1 p.m. The Terps enter the week at 7-0 on the season.
