COLLEGE PARK, Md. – #15 James Madison lacrosse put together one of its biggest road upsets in several years, taking down #3 Maryland 13-8 on Saturday afternoon at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
The Dukes moved to 6-4 on the season while handing the Terrapins their first loss, at 8-1 overall.

JMU notched its highest-ranked win since Championship Weekend in 2018 when it defeated #2 North Carolina and #4 Boston College to capture its first national title. It was also JMU's first victory over Maryland since April 5, 2003, and was the fourth win ever against the Terps.

Isabella Peterson scored five goals with one assist for JMU and has tallied 14 over her last three games. Redshirt senior

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – James Madison 4, Maryland 3
Redshirt junior
Lizzy Fox opened the scoring before Maryland grabbed a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead early. Peterson tied the game before Knobloch netted a pair in 2:12 to give the Dukes a 4-2 lead at the 5:34 mark. A Terps goal late in the period finished the scoring.
Second Quarter – James Madison 6, Maryland 6
The Terps scored the first two of the quarter to grab the lead. Peterson secured her hat trick, tying the game with both of her goals in the quarter. The Dukes took seven shots in the quarter after only shooting four times in the first.
Third Quarter – James Madison 10, Maryland 7
Sophomore
Katelyn Morgan scored to open the period before Checkosky extended the lead to three by the 5:33 mark with a pair of her own. JMU held the Terps off the board for the first 14:43 of the quarter as Dougherty made four saves.

Fourth Quarter – James Madison 13, Maryland 8
After the two sides traded goals, JMU held Maryland off the scoreboard for the final 10:12 of the contest, as Dougherty made three more saves. Redshirt freshman
Maggie Clark's final-minute goal put an exclamation point on the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Maryland entered the game having scored at least 15 goals in each contest, but scored their fewest in a game since April 30, 2021.
- It was JMU's second-largest margin of victory against Maryland, being second to an 11-4 victory back on April 10, 1976, which was the program's first win against the Terrapins.
- This was Maryland's first regular-season non-conference loss at home since Feb. 29, 2020, against Syracuse.
- The Dukes outshot Maryland 25-23 in the game after it had outshot each opponent leading into Saturday.
- Redshirt junior Rachel Matey won eight draw controls, as JMU edged UM, 13-12, in that category. Peterson also won five draws in the win.
- JMU's defense and Dougherty limited the Terps to just 1-of-8 on free-position attempts.
- JMU has combined to score 16 first-quarter goals during its current three-game win streak.
- In the pivotal third quarter, the Dukes collected six of their 15 ground balls.
