Dukes Rout Elon For Sixth Straight Win

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison lacrosse dominated from start to finish to win its sixth consecutive game, using an 18-0 scoring run to down Elon 18-2 at Sentara Park on Saturday.
The 11th-ranked Dukes improved to 9-4 on the season and 3-0 in conference play while Elon fell to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in league play. It was the second-largest win in the history of the series and marked the fourth double-digit win, as JMU improved to 9-1 all-time against the Phoenix.

JMU was led by redshirt junior Kacey Knobloch who scored a hat trick and dished out five assists, setting career highs in both assists and points. It was the second straight outing a JMU player recorded five assists.

Redshirt senior Katie Checkosky, who had the other five-assist game last Saturday, added three more today and now has 27 on the season. The Dukes' balanced attack saw seven different players score multiple goals, with redshirt sophomore Isabella Peterson netting four.

After scoring the game's first goal, Elon was held scoreless for the next 55:04.

JMU's 18 goals was the most scored this season, while Elon's two was the fewest the Dukes have allowed. The sixteen-goal margin was JMU's biggest win since a 23-7 victory over George Washington on March 16, 2021.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – James Madison 7, Elon 1
Elon scored the opening goal before JMU roared back with seven straight, the first five of which came in a span of 2:49 beginning at the 9:22 mark. Knobloch had two goals and two assists alone in the period. The Dukes outshot Elon 13-4 and outdrew them 8-1.
Second Quarter – James Madison 13, Elon 1
JMU scored twice in the first 1:28 of the quarter and both Knobloch and Peterson had hat tricks before halftime. The Dukes shut out an opponent in a quarter for the sixth time this season, helped by goalkeeper Molly Dougherty's four saves in the period.
Third Quarter – James Madison 15, Elon 1
The Dukes extended an already massive advantage behind goals from Peterson and redshirt junior Lizzy Fox. Elon was again shut out in the quarter and committed six turnovers.

Fourth Quarter – James Madison 18, Elon 2
Redshirt freshman Olivia Mattis scored twice in the quarter and freshman goalkeeper Adanya Moyer made her first career appearance in net. The Dukes held the Phoenix to just one shot in the quarter.

- The Dukes out-shot Elon 32-12 for the game, the fewest shots the Phoenix have taken since Feb. 13 against Duke. That including a 26-8 margin in shots on goal.
- JMU's 13 first-half goals marked the most scored in a half this season.
- With 11 assists in each of the last two games, the Dukes marked consecutive double-digit assist performances for the first time since March 12 and 16, 2021.
- The Dukes dominated in the circle, leading in draw controls 15-8, including 12-4 in the first half. Redshirt junior Rachel Matey grabbed eight of the 15 and has 20 in her last two games.
- JMU committed just nine turnovers, as compared to Elon's 17. JMU caused 12 of Elon's 17 giveaways.
- Seven different Dukes scored multiple goals, the most in a game this season.
- Elon is first opponent this year JMU has shut out in multiple quarters.
- Checkosky has seven consecutive multi-assist games, becoming the first player to accomplish the feat since Monica Zabel had 15 straight multi-assist games in 2012.
- Redshirt junior Mairead Durkin added three caused turnovers to her total and was one of five JMU defenders to cause multiple Elon turnovers on Saturday.
RECORD WATCH
- Durkin jumped to 37 caused turnovers for the season, currently ninth all-time in single-season history and 10 away from Haley Warden's record in 2017.
- Peterson moved into a tie for ninth for goals in a season, 29 away from the JMU record.
