JMU Faces Sixth-Seeded Loyola in NCAA Second Round Sunday

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison lacrosse faces a huge test on Sunday at sixth-seeded Loyola in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Championship, with the victor advancing to the national quarterfinals next week.

The opening draw is set for 1 p.m. at the Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with radio broadcasts both on the Varsity Network and WSVA.

This is the 44th all-time meeting between the two teams, with it being the first since 2015 and first time ever in the NCAA tournament. JMU is 19-24 in the series and has won the last four matchups.

The winner of Sunday's matchup will play the winner of Boston College and Denver in the quarterfinals on Thursday, May 19.

DUKESÂ FACE HUGE TEST AGAINST LOYOLA IN NCAA SECOND ROUND
- The Dukes are making their seventh-straight appearance in the NCAA Championship, holding a 7-5 record since 2015.
- JMU lacrosse enters the second round on an 11-game win streak, sweeping its way through the conference regular-season slate and pulling off four ranked wins during the streak.Â
- Three Dukes were named All-Americans by USA Lacrosse Magazine on Wednesday and IWLCA All-South Region on Thursday – Isabella Peterson, Mairead Durkin, and Molly Dougherty.
- JMU's first-round victory against UConn was sparked by Mairead Durkin's defensive play. She set a JMU program record with eight caused turnovers, which also marks the most any player has caused in a game this season in Division I. She also set a career-high with seven ground balls.
- Durkin's eight caused turnovers gave her 50 for the season, setting a new JMU single-season record. She also leads the team with 44 ground balls.
- The Dukes are led on offense by Peterson, who has netted an astounding 70 goals in 2022. She has also been a force in the draw circle, grabbing 97 during the campaign.
- Dougherty has put in another solid season in net with a .478 save percentage and 9.56 goals against average. She made seven stops on a .500 save percentage on Friday.
- Another pair of leaders are Katie Checkosky, who is top-10 in the country with 43 assists on the season, and defensive captain Rachel Mateym, who has controlled 93 draws.
JMU IN THE NCAA TOURNEY
- JMU is embarking on its 18th appearance all-time in the NCAA Championship, which includes a program-record seventh consecutive appearance.
- The Dukes are 14-16 all-time in the tournament. They are 8-3 at home, 1-9 away and 5-4 in neutral-site games.
- JMU has produced a victory in 11 of its 18 berths in the NCAA Championship including four of its last five.
- Before Friday, The Dukes had last played in Maryland in the postseason in 2019.Â
- JMU is just four years removed from capturing its first national championship, as it beat Virginia, Florida, North Carolina and Boston College on its way to the title.
