Harrisonburg, Va. – James Madison Volleyball opened up the season with a 3-1 ((25-15, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17) win over UAlbany Friday on day one of the JMU Invitational.

The Dukes start off 1-0 while the Great Danes fell to 0-2.

Miëtte Veldman and Bre Reid led the Dukes with 16 and 15 kills respectively, while
Caroline Dozier recorded 47 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
The Dukes took an early 11-5 off of a 6-0 run with two aces from freshman
Julia McNeley and two kills form Dozier. UAlbany was unable to keep up with JMU, with a kill from Veldman sealing the 25-15 win.

Second Set
The second set was tight early on, with a 4-0 run taking the Dukes up 18-15, but a four-point run by UAlbany closed out the frame at 25-21 and allowed them to tie the match.

Third Set
In a dominant third set, JMU recorded a .235 hitting percentage in the third set while UAlbany marked a .000 hitting percentage. Reid tallied 10 total attacks and three kills to help the Dukes take set three.

Fourth Set
The fourth set started off back-and-forth, but a 3-0 run put the Dukes up 13-9, which the Great Danes were unable to recover from. A final 4-0 stretch secured the 25-17 win for JMU.

MATCH NOTES
- Freshmen Reid and McNeley had a dominant first game of their career, with Reid recording 15 kills and McNeley leading the team with two service aces.
- In the past 10 years, the Dukes have started off the season with a win seven times
