HARRISONBURG, Va. –
Miëtte Veldman led James Madison volleyball in a weekend sweep with 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-10) win over Robert Morris and a tight 3-2 (25-20, 31-29, 20-25, 23-25, 15-4) win over Kent State to wrap up the JMU Invitational on Saturday.
The Dukes improved to 3-0 , while the Colonials finished the invitational 1-2 and the Golden Flashes went 2-1.
Veldman was named the invitational's MVP and tallied 37 kills on the day and
Caroline Dozier made the All-Tournament team with 67 assists across the two games.
Madilyn O'Toole also recorded seven service aces, five of which occurred in the game against Robert Morris.
MATCH ONE
First Set
The Dukes took an early 13-6 lead, marked by two aces from
Madilyn O'Toole. The team recorded 17 kills in the first set, with
Danielle Nathan and
Miëtte Veldman each tallying five.
Second Set
A 6-0 run with another two aces from O'Toole put the Dukes up 7-4 and was quickly followed by two additional aces from
Sophie Davis. Robert was unable to respond and a powerful kill from Veldman finished off the set.
Third Set
In a very dominant set, the Dukes had a 8-0 run where Davis recorded another two aces to give JMU a 10-3 lead. A final 7-0 run with kills from Veldman,
Emma Klanica, Davis and
Cameryn Jones wrapped up the match to give the Dukes a 25-10 win.
MATCH TWO
First Set
The Dukes started off the set with a 5-0 run highlighted by two service aces from O'Toole, which was followed by another 5-0 run. A 6-0 run from Kent State brought the game to a close 15-14, but JMU was able to bring it back and take the first set.
Second Set
The set was started with another 5-0 run from the Dukes, but the Golden Flashes were able to respond. After falling to 12-5, the Dukes were able to tie it 21-21 with kills from Nathan, Davis and Veldman. Kent State went on a 4-0 run to get ahead 24-21, but Veldman and Dozier came through with kills to tie the game 24-24. It was back-and-forth until a Kent State attack error and a kill from Davis secured the set for JMU.
Third Set
In another neck-and-neck set, a 7-0 run for Kent State at the end brought the match to a fourth set.
Fourth Set
Kent State started off with an early lead, but JMU was able to come back and tie the set 12-12 early on. The set remained close, but the Golden Flashes took the fourth set 25-23.
Fifth Set
The Dukes had a dominant fifth set, starting it off with a 10-0 run which the Golden Flashes were unable to respond to. Veldman tallied five kills in the final set to get the Dukes the win.
MATCH NOTES
- The Dukes last started off the season 3-0 in 2017.
- Davis set a career high five aces against Robert Morris, while O'Toole tied her career high with five as well.
