HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison volleyball opened up Sun Belt play with a win, sweeping Appalachian State 3-0 (29-27, 25-21, 25-14) on Friday at Sinclair Gym.
The Dukes improved to 7-3 (1-0) while the Mountaineers fell to 7-5 (0-1).
Miëtte Veldman led the Dukes with 13 kills and
Annie Smith recorded a .400 hitting percentage and seven blocks.
Sophie Davis followed in these two categories, notching 10 kills and five blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
With a very even start, App State took a 18-14 lead after a 4-0 run. JMU responded with a 5-1 run to even out the score 21-21. Taking the game to five separate set points, the Dukes took theset 29-27.
Second Set
In another close set, after being 19-19, the Dukes set themselves apart with a 3-0 run, putting them in the position to go up 2-0 in the match.
Third Set
The Dukes started off the set 8-4 and maintained their lead for the rest of the set. An additional 6-1 run furthered the lead and JMU took the match to win their first conference game.
GAME NOTES
- Annie Smith added one to her career high with eight kills.
- Caroline Dozier broke 1500 career assists with her 30 assists in the match, with a career total of 1527. She is tenth in the record book for career assists at JMU.
