HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison volleyball opened up Sun Belt play with a win, sweeping Appalachian State 3-0 (29-27, 25-21, 25-14) on Friday at Sinclair Gym.

The Dukes improved to 7-3 (1-0) while the Mountaineers fell to 7-5 (0-1).

Miëtte Veldman led the Dukes with 13 kills and Annie Smith recorded a .400 hitting percentage and seven blocks. Sophie Davis followed in these two categories, notching 10 kills and five blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
With a very even start, App State took a 18-14 lead after a 4-0 run. JMU responded with a 5-1 run to even out the score 21-21. Taking the game to five separate set points, the Dukes took theset 29-27.

Second Set
In another close set, after being 19-19, the Dukes set themselves apart with a 3-0 run, putting them in the position to go up 2-0 in the match.

Third Set
The Dukes started off the set 8-4 and maintained their lead for the rest of the set. An additional 6-1 run furthered the lead and JMU took the match to win their first conference game.

GAME NOTES

Annie Smith added one to her career high with eight kills.
Caroline Dozier broke 1500 career assists with her 30 assists in the match, with a career total of 1527. She is tenth in the record book for career assists at JMU.

The Dukes will wrap up the weekend series against the Mountaineers on Saturday at 1 p.m. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
