LOUISVILLE – James Madison's defense fought hard to hold off No. 5 Louisville's attack, but a late third-quarter goal by the Cardinals proved to be the difference as UofL held on to win 1-0 Friday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
The Dukes sit at 2-3, having lost three straight games, all of which have occurred on the road. Louisville improved to 5-0 on the season heading into ACC competition.
Seniors
Diede Remijnse and
Eveline Zwager both recorded three shots on promising looks but could not overcome the Cardinals' stingy defense. Junior goalkeeper
Brandelynn Heinbaugh started for JMU and made six saves, three of which came in the first quarter.Â
How It Happened
- Heinbaugh faced five shots in the first quarter but made three saves to keep the Cardinals scoreless. The Dukes did not register a shot in the opening period.
- After Louisville controlled possession for most of the first quarter, JMU responded by not allowing UofL to get a shot off in the second.
- Louisville took advantage of Dukes' green card, scoring the first goal of the game with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter.
- At the 9:08 mark of the fourth quarter, Zwager had a clean shot on goal that was partially blocked by Cardinal goalkeeper Sasha Elliott and ricocheted off the post.
- The Dukes had three corners in a 21-second span following the save but did not capitalize.Â
- JMU pulled Heinbaugh to put out an extra attacker with two minutes remaining, however, the Dukes failed to produce another shot before the final whistle.
Game Notes
- UofL recorded more shots (13-9) and shots on goal (7-3), while the Dukes earned more corners (6-2).
- Louisville leads the all-time series 6-2. The Cardinals have won six consecutive matches against the Dukes, and have come out on top 1-0 in the last two contests. Last year's battle between the two teams was also JMU's last time being shut out until today's affair.
- The Dukes have lost three straight games. The last time the Dukes dropped three games in a row was in 2021 with losses to Appalachian State (0-2, Sept. 10), No. 14 Wake Forest (2-6), and No. 17 Duke (1-3).
Quoting Head Coach Christy Morgan
"It was a hard-fought game," said Morgan. "We competed and we are just one step away from greatness. I'm looking for someone to take that step. There will be many more opportunities for someone to step up. I'm proud of the fight."
