CINCINNATI –
Peyton McDaniel registered a double-double (22 points, 13 rebounds), while
Steph Ouderkirk scored a career-high 16 as the Dukes rolled past Xavier, 81-54, on Saturday night at the Cintas Center.
JMU (2-1) outscored the Musketeers (0-2) 25-5 in bench points and 18-1 in second chance points. Additionally, the Dukes shot 50.0% (28-of-56) from the field compared to XU's 35.1% (20-of-57).
The duo of McDaniel and Ouderkirk scored in double figures, while junior
Ashanti Barnes tied her Division I career-high of nine to go along with five rebounds and two assists. McDaniel's 13 boards set a career-high, and she added a pair of blocks and steals on the defensive end.
Redshirt junior
Olivia Mullins chipped in with eight points and a team-best four assists in the win. Classmate
Annalicia Goodman dominated in the paint with three blocks and a steal.
Jamia Hazell recorded three steals to tie her career high.
Kaysia Woods (17 points) and Macka Scarlett (15 points) paced the Musketeers, while Nila Blackford pulled down seven boards in the loss. Woods went 5-for-13 (.385) and dished out four helpers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- The Dukes scored by committee in the opening frame, led by Ouderkirk with five, followed by McDaniel and redshirt junior Kseniia Kozlova with four each.
- JMU dominated the Musketeers on the glass 13-3.
- Xavier held a 14-13 edge late in the quarter before the Dukes ended the period on a 6-0 to go up 19-14 after one.
Second Quarter
- James Madison's scoring ways continued as its advantage ballooned to 12 (26-14) at the 8:21 mark of the second, forcing an XU timeout.
- The Dukes experienced a cold shooting stretch in the middle of the period, failing to make a basket for over five minutes.
- McDaniel registered eight points and a pair of blocks to give JMU a 33-21 lead at the intermission.
Third Quarter
- JMU began to pull away in the third, with McDaniel (9), Barnes (5) and Mullins (4) helping extend the lead.
- The Dukes generated 14 points in the paint and eight off the bench in the quarter for a 56-33 advantage heading into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
- Ouderkirk dazzled in the final frame, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line for 11 points. The redshirt junior also grabbed four rebounds and added an assist in ten minutes of action.
- The Dukes were efficient from the line down the stretch, sinking 10-of-11 (.909) to come away with a dominant 81-54 victory.
GAME NOTES
- James Madison now leads the all-time series over Xavier, 1-0.
- McDaniel's double-double was the second of her career. The redshirt sophomore achieved the feat last season with 18 points and 10 rebounds at App State on Feb. 22.
- The Dukes made 21-of-24 (.875) from the line. The effort marked the first time the team had made 20 or more free throws since sinking 22-of-29 (.759) in the same game against the Mountaineers. Additionally, JMU's efficiency from the charity stripe was its first time shooting 80.0% or better since making 86.4% (19-of-22) versus Marshall on Feb. 24.
- James Madison scored 80 points for the third time in the last five games dating back to last season. In 2022-23, the Dukes went 17-0 when scoring 70 or more.
- JMU led by as many as 28 (61-33) with 8:39 remaining in the fourth quarter.
- The Dukes out-rebounded the Musketeers 41-22, highlighted by 12 JMU offensive boards.
