HARRISONBURG, Va. – Looking to build off of a run last year to the Sun Belt Conference championship match in the first season of the new looked conference, Head Coach
Paul Zazenski has announced the 2023 James Madison men's soccer schedule on Monday morning.
"As always, we have lined up the 2023 schedule to test ourselves against the best programs in the country," said Zazenski. "The blend of high-level non-conference opponents as well as an ever-challenging Sun Belt schedule should produce an exciting fall no doubt. We are adding a very strong UCF team into our conference play which should only strengthen our conference top to bottom."
The annual Fairfield by Marriott Invitational will kick off the 2023 slate with Duquesne, UCLA and Virginia Tech all visiting Sentara Park. The Dukes will begin the invitational with an Aug. 24 matchup with Duquesne before facing UCLA on Aug. 27, the first of five matchups in the fall against teams that were in the NCAA tournament last season.
After the opening weekend, the Dukes will have a pair of back-to-back road matches before a set of home matches proceeding the start of Sun Belt play. They will hit the road against Radford (Sept. 1) and Gardner-Webb (Sept.5) and then return home for Mount St. Mary's (Sept. 9) and Virginia (Sept. 12).
League play will begin with a matchup against Marshall at Sentara Park on Sept. 16. South Carolina (Sept. 30), Old Dominion (Oct. 18) and Georgia Southern (Oct. 27) will also come to Harrisonburg during the regular season.
After facing Marshall to open the Sun Belt slate, the Dukes will travel to Georgetown (Sept. 19) before going on the road for the first time in 2023 against a conference foe. They will begin with Coastal Carolina on Sept. 23, followed by West Virginia (Oct. 8), defending champion Kentucky (Oct. 13), and Georgia State (Oct. 22). The regular season will conclude on Oct. 31 at UCF, who will be joining the league as an associate member to coincide its membership in the Big XII Conference.
The Sun Belt Championship will be held from Nov. 5-12, with the top two seeds hosting the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds and the top-seeded team remaining hosting the championship match.
Zazenski added, "we feel the Sun Belt is one of the top conferences in all of Division I and we are now heading into the full cycle of Sun Belt games, so adjustments are ever changing. We are looking forward to the opportunity to represent our school and program each time we take the field and know there will be plenty of tough games on the horizon."
