Dukes Drop Defensive Battle at No. 12 Wake Forest
9/3/2023 7:00:00 PM | Field Hockey
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 12 Wake Forest held James Madison without a penalty corner and allowed just three shots to blank the Dukes 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.
Â
JMU also played shorthanded for nearly 13 minutes, as the Dukes picked up four green cards and one yellow card.
Â
James Madison owns a 2-2 record, with both losses this season coming on the road. The Demon Deacons also sit at 2-2 and look to stay on track, hosting App State on Sunday, Sept. 10.
Â
The Dukes saw shots from senior Tori Carawan and sophomores Charlotte Duthoit and Julie Narleski, all of which were on goal.
Â
Senior Brandelynn Heinbaugh and the JMU defense denied the Demon Deacons on six out of their seven penalty corner attempts. Heinbaugh made six saves on the afternoon, including a stick save off a redirect in the final frame.
Â
How It Happened
"It was a hard-fought game -- they just finished one in the cage. I'm proud of this fight. The JMU foundation is filled with fight, hustle, desire and extra effort. Anyone who doesn't play with that extreme desire won't fit here. As the No. 12 team in the nation, they had to fight for that win. We won't roll over for anyone!"

- Carawan, Duthoit, and Narleski recorded shots on frame during the third, but the Deacs' Ellie Todd came up with the save each time.
