KENT, Ohio – James Madison held Kent State to 0-for-19 from three in a 67-56 season-opening win inside the M.A.C. Center on Monday night in non-conference women's basketball action.
Ro Scott scored 19 points off the bench to pace the Dukes (1-0) in her JMU debut.
Jamia Hazell finished with 15 points, while
Ashanti Barnes chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds.
Zakiya Stephenson led all players with four assists to go along with five points.
Kseniia Kozlova poured in 11 points in 27 minutes of action. On the defensive end,
Peyton McDaniel grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and a career-high seven steals. McDaniel also dished out a career-best three assists.
Riley Rismiller scored a game-high 20 points and made 14-of-15 (.933) from the free throw line. Bridget Dunn
wrangled in 10 rebounds and recorded five blocks. Journey Hildebrand finished with nine points, while Kaley Perkins, Tatiana Thomas and Jenna Batsch added eight apiece.

First Quarter – JMU 18, Kent State 14
- The Dukes jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening 1:13, but went into the first media timeout making one of their last eight field goals for a 10-8 edge.
- Hazell scored eight points on 3-of-6 (.500) from the floor, highlighted by an and-one halfway through the period.
Second Quarter – JMU 31, Kent State 23
- After Barnes scored the first basket of the quarter, JMU went scoreless for 5:11 of play.
- Kent State shot 1-of-14 (.071), including 0-for-6 from three.
- Bree Robinson collected an offensive rebound and connected on a baseline jumper at the buzzer to give the Dukes a 31-23 lead at the break.
Third Quarter – JMU 49, Kent State 43
- JMU's advantage grew to 12 (41-29) at the 4:45 mark.
- The Golden Flashes closed the frame on a 6-1 run to make it 49-43 heading into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter – JMU 67, Kent State 56
- Scott shot 3-of-5 (.600) for seven points, including the lone three-pointer of the period.
- The Dukes scored 10 points in the paint and picked up seven points from the bench.
- Kent State went 2-for-12 (.167) from the field but went a perfect 9-for-9 from the line.

- James Madison leads Kent State, 2-0, in the all-time series dating back to 1996.
- The last time JMU held an opponent to zero three-pointers was in 2023 when Louisiana went 0-of-13 from behind the arc on Feb. 9.
- McDaniel's seven steals are tied for the most by a Duke since Angela Mickens came away with seven against Elon on Jan. 15, 2015.
