JMU Falls to Charlotte on Day Two of Gamecock Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – James Madison softball fell to Charlotte, 4-1, on day two of the Gamecock Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The loss dropped JMU to 8-4 on the season, while Charlotte improved to 8-5. The Dukes managed only five hits in the contest, while the 49ers used a four-run fourth inning to take control of the game.

Alissa Humphrey (3-2) started in the circle for the second consecutive game, working 3.0 innings and striking out four batters. Reed Butler led the Dukes at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk.

Payton List relieved Humphrey, yielding two runs in an inning before Molly Grube worked two scoreless innings. Besides Butler's two hits, Bella Henzler, Madison Edwards, and Jasmine Hall also recorded hits in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- JMU led off the game with back-to-back singles from Henzler and Hall, but an out at the plate and two strikeouts kept the Dukes off the board.
- Two runners reached on walks for JMU in the top of the second, but a strikeout and groundout ended the Dukes threat.
- Butler hammered a 2-0 pitch to dead center field for a home run, giving JMU a 1-0 lead in the third.Â
- Two RBI doubles from Charlotte were enough for the 49ers to take a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning.
- Butler walked and advanced on a wild pitch in the seventh, but a flyout and popup ended the JMU threat and gave Charlotte the win.
- Butler picked up her team-leading 14th RBI of the season, already more than her 2023 total of 13. Her 14 RBIs are tied for the 18th-highest total in the country.
- List recorded the first at-bat of her career in the sixth inning.
- JMU recorded zero errors for the sixth time this season.
- Through 12 games, Abbie Campbell's eight walks is the highest on JMU. The junior shortstop holds a .444 on-base percentage, second behind Butler (.455).
