BOONE, N.C. – App State knocked down 12-of-30 (.400) from three-point range to hold off James Madison for an 83-79 win inside the Holmes Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference women's basketball action.
The Mountaineers (15-13, 8-8 SBC) outrebounded JMU (19-10, 11-5 SBC) in the fourth quarter, 15-11, for six second chance points.
Redshirt junior
Jamia Hazell led the Dukes in scoring with 19 points on 9-of-17 (.529) from the field. Redshirt sophomore

Annalicia Goodman recorded 12 points and nine rebounds in the loss.
For App State, Faith Alston dropped 25 points and nine assists, pacing all players in both categories. Taylor Lewis connected on 5-of-10 from three for 23 points to go along with eight rebounds. Rylan Moffitt and Alexis Black chipped in with 14 and 13, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- An early 6-0 run gave the Dukes an 8-4 edge at the 6:34 mark.
- The Mountaineers took an 18-14 lead thanks to a late 9-0 spurt.
- James Madison responded to tie the game at 23 after one.
- Junior Ashanti Barnes and graduate student Carole Miller each scored seven points in the frame.
Second Quarter
- App State built a 29-24 advantage early in the period, but JMU responded for a 33-32 edge at the media timeout.
- The Dukes went scoreless for the final 2:10 of the half to trail 41-37.
- James Madison shot 6-for-21 (.286) from the field and 1-of-6 (.167) from three in the quarter.
Third Quarter
- The Mountaineers' lead grew to six (48-42) at the 8:09 mark.
- App State held on to a 58-54 cushion at the media timeout as both teams heated up from the field. The Dukes opened the period shooting 8-of-11 (.727) compared to the Mountaineers' 6-of-11 (.545).
- JMU tied the game at 58-58 with 3:05 left in the quarter before a trio of three-pointers gave App State a 68-60 advantage late in the period.
Fourth Quarter
- The Mountaineers continued to hit shots from long range, resulting in a 76-64 lead to force a JMU timeout.
- The Dukes went on a 7-0 run out of the timeout, highlighted by a pair of triples from McDaniel to make it 76-71.
- Redshirt junior Olivia Mullins made one of two shots from the line as JMU trailed 78-75 with 2:25 on the clock.
- App State weathered the storm by outrebounding the Dukes 15-11 to hang on for an 83-79 victory.
GAME NOTES
- James Madison leads App State in the all-time series, 6-2.
- The Dukes lost despite scoring more points in the paint (44-12), bench points (27-14) and second chance points (22-13).
- JMU outworked the Mountaineers on the glass, 48-42. The Dukes have won the rebounding battle 25 times this season.
- App State's 83 points are the third-most by a JMU opponent this season, behind Troy (87, Jan. 13) and Michigan State (95, Nov. 23).
- McDaniel sank four threes, marking her fifth game this year with at least four triples.
