Annalicia Goodman registered a career-best 17 points to lead James Madison women's basketball past Coastal Carolina in a wire-to-wire 69-60 win on Wednesday night inside the HTC Center.
JMU (20-10, 12-5 SBC) took advantage of its 16 offensive rebounds for 21 second-chance points compared to CCU's (10-20, 5-12) six.
Goodman's scoring came on a 6-of-10 (.600) shooting night and flawless 5-for-5 effort from the line to go along with five rebounds and two blocks. Redshirt sophomore
Peyton McDaniel recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, knocking down 2-of-3 from three. Junior
Ashanti Barnes finished with nine points and eight rebounds, while sophomore
Chloe Sterling had nine points and two assists. Redshirt junior
Steph Ouderkirk shot a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and 2-for-2 from long range.
Makaila Cange led all players with 19 points, connecting on 3-of-6 from three and grabbing eight boards. Deaja Richardson dropped 12 points, while Arin Freeman and Alancia Ramsey both added 10 in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – JMU 21, CCU 15
- Balanced scoring resulted in a 9-2 lead for the Dukes to force a Coastal Carolina timeout.
- The Chanticleers responded with a quick 6-0 to make it a one-point game (9-8).
- Threes from Ouderkirk and Olivia Mullins gave JMU a 15-8 advantage moments later.
- James Madison saw seven players score in the first, led by McDaniel with five.
Second Quarter – JMU 40, CCU 32
- Goodman scored on three straight possessions to put the Dukes ahead 29-18 halfway through the period.
- The scoring was part of a 12-2 run, highlighted by another Ouderkirk triple to make it 35-20 and force another Coastal timeout.
- The Chants answered with an 8-0 spurt with 1:10 left in the half.
- James Madison continued its strong shooting, going 8-for-20 (.400) from the field and 2-of-4 (.500) from three in the frame.
Third Quarter – JMU 51, CCU 48
- CCU came out on a 7-0 tear to trail by one (40-39) early in the quarter.
- The Dukes responded with a 7-0 run to lead 47-39, before Coastal dropped in five to make it a 47-44 game at the media timeout.
- JMU made 1-of-8 (.125) while the Chanticleers shot 2-of-11 (.182) from the field to close out the third.
Fourth Quarter – JMU 69, CCU 60
- The Dukes held CCU scoreless for 3:18 to hold on to a 55-52 edge near the midpoint of the frame.
- The Chanticleers suffered a 4:06 drought as JMU went ahead 62-54 with under two minutes remaining.
- Senior Hevynne Bristow scored five of her six points in the fourth to help the Dukes seal the deal.
GAME NOTES
- James Madison leads Coastal Carolina in the all-time series 4-1.
- The Dukes held an advantage in points in the paint (30-24), bench points (24-17), points off turnovers (22-11) and second-chance points (21-6).
- JMU registered six blocks, tied for the second most by the team this season. The Dukes had seven rejections at Xavier on Nov. 11.
- Coming into the game, Goodman had never shot 5-of-5 or better from the line.
- McDaniel's double-double was her sixth of the season and the seventh in her career.
- The Dukes' 69 points are the second-fewest in a win against a Sun Belt Conference opponent this season. Previously, James Madison defeated Arkansas State 64-57 on Jan. 4.
- JMU outworked the Chanticleers on the glass, 45-38. The Dukes have won the rebounding battle 26 times this season.
