Dukes Drop Midweek Tilt at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – James Madison softball battled back from a 4-0 deficit to tie Maryland at 4-4 in the fifth inning, but the Terrapins came away with a 6-5 non-conference win over the Dukes on Tuesday evening at the Maryland Softball Stadium.

Maryland (13-14) scored six runs on only four hits and an error, but hit three home runs, including two from Mazie MacFarlane (2-5, 5 RBI). The Dukes fell to 17-10 while picking up five runs and nine hits.

KK Mathis (1-for-4) and Bella Henzler (1-for-4) each hit home runs for the Dukes at the plate, while Reed Butler reached base safely for the 21st consecutive game and finished 2-for-3 with a walk. Madison Edwards finished 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, while Jasmine Hall recorded a single and scored a run out of the leadoff spot.

Alissa Humphrey started for JMU but was unable to record an out. Payton List entered for Humphrey, working 2.2 innings while giving up four runs (three earned). Kirsten Fleet was charged with her first loss of the season, yielding two earned runs on two hits.

How It Happened
- Butler worked a two-out walk in the top of the first, reaching base safely for the 21st consecutive game.Â
- The first two batters reached for Maryland in the bottom of the first, but List entered in relief and retired the Terrapins with a strikeout, flyout, and groundout to keep the game scoreless.
- List walked and Edwards singled, but the Dukes did not push any runs across in the top of the second.
- List kept Maryland off the scoreboard in the second with a strikeout and two lineouts.
- A two-out grand slam from the Terrapins opened the scoring and gave the home team a 4-0 lead in the third.Â
- Edwards picked up her second hit of the day, doubling down the left field line to score Abbie Campbell and cut the Maryland lead to 4-1 in the top of the fourth.Â
- J. Hall tripled to lead off the top of the fifth and scored on an RBI single from Butler to cut the Maryland lead to 4-2, followed by Mathis' two-run homer, which tied the game at 4-4 going into the bottom of the fifth.Â
- Williams homered to give Maryland a 5-4 lead with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, and MacFarlane followed with her second long ball to give the Terrapins another insurance run (6-4).
- Henzler cut the Maryland lead to 6-5 with her fifth homer of the year, but the Dukes failed to bring another run across.
