Dukes Complete Comeback, Win in Extras to Push Win Streak to Nine

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – James Madison baseball pushed its win streak to nine games after coming back from three runs down to tie ETSU in the eighth inning before scoring a run in the 10th inning to earn a 6-5 win on Friday afternoon at Thomas Stadium.

The Dukes improved to 10-3, the fastest JMU has taken to reach 10 wins since winning 10 of the first 11 games of the 2011 season. The Buccaneers dropped to 10-3 and had their winning streak of four snapped.

At the plate, redshirt Jacob Steinberg led the Dukes by going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI's. Senior Joe Vogatsky moved to 2-0 this season with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, scattering four hits and striking out three.

How It Happened
First Inning
ETSU scratched the first run across with a single, scoring Tommy Barth from third after reaching on a walk.

Second Inning
The Dukes responded with two in the top of the second, as junior Coleman Calabrese was hit by a pitch before back-to-back doubles from graduate Brendan O'Donnell and Steinberg. Calabrese and O'Donnell scored off Steinberg's double to give JMU a 2-1 lead.

The lead didn't last long with Cody Miller being hit by a pitch leading off the bottom of the inning, stealing second and then scoring on a single.

Third Inning
To lead off the third, the Bucs loaded the bases with no outs ahead of a two-run double from Noah Gent. A sacrifice fly the next at bat gave ETSU a 5-2 lead.

Fourth Inning
JMU got within one with redshirt senior Mason Dunaway leading off with a double and being followed by Calabrese's sixth home run of the season to bring the score to 5-4.

Eighth Inning
Dunaway tied the game for the Dukes in the eighth, following a leadoff single by junior Fenwick Trimble who then was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Dunaway's base knock to score Trimble knotted the game at five.

10th Inning
Trimble and junior Ryan Dooley led off the 10th inning with both recording singles. A double steal by the pair moved the runners into scoring position with no outs, setting up Dunaway to give JMU a 6-5 lead on a sacrifice fly.

- ETSU stranded 13 runners on the base paths.
- The two longest hit streaks and reached base streaks came to an end from Wyatt Peifer and Jason Schiavone. Peifer had a 10-game hit and reached base streak while Schiavone had reached base in every game this season and had a nine-game hit streak.
- JMU did not put a runner on in the first inning for the first time since Feb. 19 at No. 2 Arkansas.
- The three-run deficit is the largest deficit JMU has come back from to win a game this season.
- It is the first extra innings game for the Dukes since playing 11 against Old Dominion on May 14 last season and the first extra innings win since taking down Georgia State in 10 innings on April 6 a year ago.
