HARRISONBURG, Va. – The James Madison volleyball team fell in five sets (25-12, 21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 9-15) to Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
JMU falls to 1-1, while the Seawolves improve to 3-0, with all their victories coming in five sets.
The redshirt senior tandem of
Miëtte Veldman and
Savanah Cockrill finished with 17 kills apiece, with Veldman also collecting 13 digs for her first double-double of the season. Cockrill also tied a career-high eight blocks. Sophomore
Olivia Vance registered 10 kills while also tallying a dig.
Defensively, Redshirt sophomore
Melisa Ilter picked up a career-best six blocks while libero
Jaydyn Clemmer recorded 16 digs. Overall, the Dukes finished with 76 digs, including five in double digits.
How It Happened
Set One: JMU 25-12
- The Dukes jumped out to a 15-8 lead on the heels of a Cockrill kill, forcing a Seawolves timeout.
- Veldman extended JMU's lead to 12 (21-9) and the Dukes cruised to the victory in the first set.
- JMU hit .370 in the first game while holding Stony Brook to .200.
Set Two: SBU 25-21
- Stony Brook jumped ahead first, going up 10-7 on a kill from Kali Moore.
- The Seawolves kept James Madison at bay, forcing a Dukes timeout on another kill from Moore which made the score 16-13.
- JMU never got closer than four points as SBU evened up the match at 1-1.
- The Dukes hit .195 in the second set, compared to the Seawolves' .389.
Set Three: JMU 25-20
- A back-and-forth affair broke out in the fourth, but JMU forced the first timeout of the set at 12-10 on a Veldman kill.
- The Dukes extended their lead to five (21-16) on a double block from Cockrill and Sarah Schnell.
- Stony Book pulled to within two points (22-20), but JMU ended the set with three straight points, which included consecutive blocks from Ilter and Cockrill.
Set Four: SBU 25-23
- SBU rattled off five straight points to gain an early 12-8 lead in the fourth.
- The Dukes responded, eventually evening up the score at 15-15 on a kill from Veldman.
- JMU grabbed a commanding 23-19 lead, but six straight points from the Seawolves forced a decisive fifth set.
Set Five: SBU 15-9
- Stony Brook was the first to eight points, grabbing an 8-5 lead on a Quinn Anderson kill.
- The Dukes pulled to within two (11-9), but the Seawolves thwarted JMU's rally attempt with a pair of blocks to escape with the victory.
Match Notes
- JMU lost after leading 2-1 for the first time since Nov. 4, 2022, at Marshall.
- The Dukes fall to 1-1 in the all-time series against Stony Brook.
- Vance's 10 kills are just the second time in the sophomore's career she has reached double-digit kills.
