JMU Rolls to Home-Opening Triumph over Longwood

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis opened its home slate with a dominant victory against Longwood, rolling to a 6-1 victory Saturday afternoon at the East Campus Tennis Courts.

JMU (1-1) won a pair of doubles matches and claimed four of its five singles courts in straight sets to earn the team win.

It was JMU's fifth straight win against Longwood and its 11th over the past 12 meetings, as the Dukes improved to 15-3 all-time with the Lancers.

In doubles play, the team of Markus Giersiepen and Dennis Wiebe cruised to a 6-2 victory over Ian Perl and Gary Huang on court three, as the duo conceded just three total points during their service games.

JMU clinched the doubles point on court one, where Esteve Agusti and Aurelien Schmitt won a tight bout with Marko Mrdak and Timeo Puech, 6-4. On court two, Zach Fleishman and Francisco Sinopoli led 5-4 when the match was abandoned due to the doubles clinch.

On the singles side, JMU extended the lead to 3-1 with victories on courts three and two. Sinopoli put on a clinic in his court-three matchup with Mrdak, easily winning 6-2, 6-1. After Puech took down Agusti in straight sets on court one, Schmitt used a strong third set to upend Paiva, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, over on court three.

JMU clinched the team victory on court four, as Fleishman earned a 6-2, 6-3 win versus Lindquist. The Dukes also saw straight-set triumphs on courts five and six, as Wiebe had a strong second frame to down Seva Rusin, 6-4, 6-1, while Giersiepen closed strong in a 6-2, 6-3 win over Perl.

It was the first career individual home victories for the freshmen trio of Fleishman, Schmitt and Wiebe.

The Dukes return to the court on Friday, Jan. 31 when it heads to Richmond, Va., to face VCU at 3 p.m.
