JMU Surges Late in Singles for 4-3 Win over UNCG

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison won a pair of three-set singles matches to rally past UNC Greensboro, 4-3, in non-conference men's tennis action on Thursday afternoon at the Hillside Courts.

JMU (5-4) used the doubles point and singles victories on courts three, five and six to earn its second straight win by a 4-3 margin. It was also its third straight win over UNCG (5-9) and the second straight season with a 4-3 score line with the Spartans.

The Dukes grabbed the early lead with doubles victories on courts three and one. After the Spartans claimed court two, at 6-1, the tandem of Harrison Lee and Dennis Wiebe took down Andrew Black and Devon Moskowitz, 6-3.

In a close bout on court one, Esteve Agusti and Zach Fleishman took control late to defeat John Gabelic and Tymofiy Khrystyuk, 6-4.

In singles play, the Spartans charged ahead with a 2-1 lead when they produced straight-set triumphs on courts four and one. Moskowitz finished first, downing Edson Sanchez, 6-2, 6-2, while Khrystyuk used a first-set tiebreak win to propel him past Aurelien Schmitt, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Three of the final four bouts would go the distance. Wiebe was the first Duke to win his singles match, as he overcame a third-set deficit. Down 4-3, he broke Elmers' serve twice en route to winning on court five, at 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

In a competitive bout on court three, Fleishman used a late break in the first and a solid showing in a second-set tiebreak to beat Black, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), giving JMU the lead back at 3-2.

Lee dropped his opening frame against Eric Lindemann on court six, but a late surge in the second forced a third and he dominated the final frame, clinching the match by scores of 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Over on court two, Gabelic closed the day by rallying past Agusti, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, for the final score.

JMU returns to action on Sunday, March 16 when it returns to Sun Belt Conference by traveling to Rome, Ga., to face Georgia State at 9 a.m. The match was relocated from Atlanta to the Rome Tennis Center due to forecasted weather.
