CHANDLER, Ariz. – Junior Michael Hake tallied a career-low 54-hole score and tied for 11th to lead James Madison men's golf to a tie for fifth at the season-opening Whirlwind Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
Hake's tournament was highlighted by a career-low 67 (-5) in Monday's second round at the par-72, 7,222-yard Whirlwind Golf Club. The transfer from Kentucky also recorded a career-low 54-hole score of 208 (-8), finishing with rounds of 73-67-68 and tying for 11th on the 71-player leaderboard.
Alex Seibal joined Hake in the top 25, as the senior tied for 18th with a three-round aggregate of 210 (-6), a career low. Seibal opened his 2025-26 season with a career-best 66 (-6) on Monday before carding rounds of 70 (-2) and 74 (+2) for his best finish as a Duke.
JMU finished with a 54-hole score of 839 (-25), tied for the third third-lowest event total in program history. The Dukes placed fifth out of 12 teams, as host Southern Cal took home the team title with a three-round tally of 812 (-52).
René Bergendi came in as the No. 3 finisher for JMU, as the sophomore tied for 29th at 212 (-4) with three consistent rounds of 72-69-71. Senior Václav Tichý came in with a tie for 38th at 215 (-1), posting a 74 (+2) and 73 (+1) after an opening-round 68 (-4).
Garrett Kuhla and Tommy McKenzie each rose up 10-plus spots on the leaderboard Tuesday, carding rounds of 68 (-4) and 70 (-2), respectively. Kuhla, competing as an individual outside of the JMU lineup, tied for 47th with a three-round score of 219 (+3). McKenzie improved his score every round, managing scores of 78-72-70 to tie for 52nd at 220 (+4).
James Madison returns to action Sept. 14-15 at the JT Poston Intercollegiate in Waynesville, N.C.
