JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – North Florida used the doubles point and straight-set wins on the top three courts to set the tone and down James Madison, 5-2, in men's tennis action Tuesday at the UNF Tennis Center.
The Ospreys (9-7) won two of three doubles bouts and claimed singles wins on courts one, two, three and five. For the Dukes (8-5), they earned a win on the top doubles court and produced super tiebreaker victories by
Francisco Sinopoli and
Zach Fleishman on courts four and six, respectively.
UNF improved to 2-1 all-time against JMU, as the teams met for the first time in 35 years Tuesday.
JMU took an early advantage in doubles, as
Esteve Agusti and
Aurelien Schmitt registered a 6-2 victory on court one against Aron Major and Andreas Scott. UNF responded with a 6-2 win of its own on court three and clinched the doubles point by taking down JMU, 6-4, on court two.
UNF used that momentum into singles, claiming four wins in straight sets, including on all three of the top courts.
Scott first downed Agusti by a 6-3, 6-2 margin on court one, before Youssef Labbene defeated Schmitt, 6-2, 6-0 on court two. Kyle Piqueras clinched for the Ospreys on court three with hiw 6-2, 6-1 win against
Ryan Morgan.
The lead stretched to 5-0 on court five, as Joao Portugal upended
Gur Libal, at 6-2, 6-4.
JMU got on the board with its pair of wins in third-set, super tiebreakers. Sinopoli first took a 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (10-6) victory against Breno Marques before Fleishman rallied from a set down to beat Major by scores of 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7).
JMU completes the road trip on Friday, March 20 when it faces Sun Belt foe Georgia Southern in Statesboro. The opening serve is set for a 10 a.m. start.
