Amanda Hoppert was named head cheerleading coach in July 2016. In her role at JMU, Hoppert coordinates JMU’s gameday spirit squad, competitive cheer team and mascot program.
“Our cheerleading program has seen significant growth in recent years, and Amanda Hoppert will be the perfect coach to build upon that foundation of energy and success,” Deputy Director of Athletics Geoff Polglase said. “Her fit for this role at JMU is embodied by her care for student-athletes, her coaching style, her overall commitment to success and her experience of 10 years combined at SEC and Pac-12 institutions. We are excited for Amanda to get started, for our student-athletes to learn from her and for JMU Nation to enjoy the enhanced atmosphere that is provided by JMU cheerleading.”
Hoppert brought more than 11 years of collegiate coaching experience to JMU, including stops at Ole Miss, Washington State and Central Michigan, as well as 13 years of coaching experience as an instructor with the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA). For the three years prior to joining the Dukes, Hoppert worked for Varsity Brands as an all-star specialist and sales representative.
“I am excited to get back into coaching,” Hoppert said. “The JMU culture and the Dukes’ vision for cheerleading is first class. Everyone has already been so welcoming of me into the JMU family. Opportunities like this don’t come around that often, and I’m very grateful to be part of it.”
For six years, Hoppert served as the spirit coordinator for Ole Miss, where she managed both the cheer and dance teams. During her time with the Rebels, she led the cheer squad to the 2012 World University Cheerleading championship after guiding both teams to performances at the AT&T Cotton Bowl in 2009 and 2010. She also helped introduce Rebel the Bear to the Ole Miss spirit squad line-up.
From 2003-06, Hopper was the spirit coordinator at Washington State to enhance fan and alumni participation with the athletic department. In charge of the cheerleading team, dance team and school mascot, she led both teams to competition at the USA Cheer and Dance Team Nationals in 2005 and 2006 as well as Butch T Cougar to the 2015 Capital One Mascot championships.
Hoppert started her coaching career at Central Michigan (2000-02), where she also earned her Master of Arts in Athletic Administration. She received her Bachelor of Arts in History from Missouri in 2000, minoring in communications.
