COLLEGE PARK, Md., Sept. 8, 2007 ? James Madison University won back-to-back volleyball matches by scores of 3-0 against Temple University and the University of New Hampshire to snap a streak of 12 matches without consecutive wins in the final day of the Hilton Garden Inn Greenbelt Invitational at the University of Maryland's Comcast Pavilion on Saturday.
JMU improved to 4-4 overall in 2007. Temple fell to 3-8 after losing to JMU by game scores of 30-26, 30-23, and 30-19. New Hampshire sits at 6-4 after falling to the Dukes 30-26, 32-30, and 30-16. Maryland defeated all three teams to win the invitational and improved to 8-1 this season.
Senior Allyson Halls (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy) was named to the all-tournament team for the third week in a row. Against Temple, she had 10 kills, three digs, and five blocks. Against New Hampshire, she accumulated 24 total points on 16 kills, three aces, four digs, six blocks, and a season-best .565 attack percentage. Hall moved past 900 kills in her career in the Temple match and currently has 919, needing 80 to move into eighth place in school history. Her seven block assists during the weekend give her 227 in her career to move into 10th all-time.
In the Temple match, freshman Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) had a career-bests of 15 kills and 17.5 points while adding five digs. Freshman Kay Weninger (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) also had career-highs of nine kills, 12 points, and four blocks. Junior Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) had 38 assists and joined Halls on the all-tournament squad.
The Owls were led by junior Patricia Vernon's (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) 13 kills and senior Yue Liu's (Tianting, China/Hai He) 10 kills. Freshman Ariel Pierre (Bellerose, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) was the lone player with double-digit digs with 10 and also had 21 assists.
Against UNH, Halls was the lone JMU player in double-digit kills. Junior Michelle Johnson (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) had seven kills and five blocks. Callahan had nine kills and eight digs. Miles had 34 assists. Senior libero Jena Pierson (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison) upped her JMU career record for digs to 1,634, surpassing the 1,6
