HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 17, 2008 ? Delaware overcame six-point deficits in two sets and withstood a James Madison rally in the fourth to pull out a 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association women's volleyball match on Friday evening in Sinclair Gymnasium.
Delaware defeated JMU by set scores of 21-25, 25-21, 25-23, and 25-23. The Blue Hens and Dukes sit with identical 9-13 records overall and 3-3 in the CAA after the match.
Sophomore Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) had her ninth double-double of the season with 15 kills, 10 digs, and two aces. Senior Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) totaled 40 assists, seven digs, three kills, and three blocks. Senior Michelle Johnson (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) added eight kills and six blocks. Sophomore Kay Weninger (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) tallied five kills and 10 digs while sophomore Sofia Lindroth (Edwards, Colo./Battle Mountain) contributed a match-high 17 digs.
Sophomore Paige Erickson led Delaware with 18 kills and .467 hitting with five blocks. Sophomore Katie Dennehy had 14 kills and nine digs while freshman Kim Stewart added 10 kills and nine digs. Sophomore setter Jess Chason had a double-double with 46 assists and 11 digs. Junior CAA Preseason Player of the Year Stephanie Barry was held to 14 digs in the match.
The first set featured 11 ties and four lead changes as the Dukes and Blue Hens battled back and forth with neither team taking a substantial lead. UD led 16-15 when a Johnson kill and a pair of Callahan kills helped the Dukes take the lead for good at 19-16. Leading 23-21, JMU clinched the win with another Johnson kill and a Blue Hens attack error. The difference in the set was four service errors by UD compared to none for JMU. Erickson had six kills while Callahan had five.
JMU appeared to grab control of the second set, taking a 13-7 lead. However, Delaware managed to battle back within one at 15-14. The Dukes still led 20-17 when the Blue Hens closed the match winning eight of nine points, including a 6-0 run to turn a 21-19 JMU lead into a 25-21 UD set win. Erickson had three kills during the run a
