HARRISONBURG, Va., April 26, 2x008 ? The James Madison softball team swept both ends of a Saturday doubleheader against George Mason winning game one 2-0 and scoring three runs in the top of the seventh for a come-from-behind 6-5 win in game two. Madison ran its winning streak to a season-high seven games and picked up its third seventh-inning win in the last seven games.
The Dukes improved to 26-20 overall and 10-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association while the Patriots dropped to 19-28, overall and 6-10 in conference.
A wild seventh inning led to a three-run comeback for Madison. With Mason holding a 5-3 edge the Dukes went to work in the seventh. Freshman catcher Katie Spitzer (Broadway, Va./Broadway) led off with a pinch hit single to left and was pinch run for by freshman shortstop Melissa Hill (Santee, Calif./Santee). Junior third baseman Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun County) followed that with a single to left center, but center fielder Dee Murray threw Simons out trying to go first to third. Winter, thinking there were three outs, spiked the ball and Kirk took advantage moving up to third. GMU first baseman Ashli Breau tried to through Kirk out at third but threw the ball away, allowing the eventual winning run to score.
