HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 30, 2008 ? Virginia captured the Days Inn JMU Invitational championship with a 3-1 win over James Madison in the tournament finale on Saturday evening in Sinclair Gymnasium.
Virginia (3-0) defeated JMU (1-2) by set scores of 29-27, 21-25, 25-19, and 25-16. In the other match of the evening, Murray State (2-1) fought back from a 2-0 deficit to beat New Hampshire 17-25, 21-25, 26-24, 25-23, and 15-12.
Virginia junior Lauren Dickson was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She was joined on the All-Tournament squad by senior Shannon Davis and senior Marlow Bruneau of Virginia, senior Alison Mugler and senior Heather Norris of Murray State, senior Michelle Johnson (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) of JMU, and junior Kirsten Bates of New Hampshire.
In the first set against Virginia, JMU held a 23-19 advantage before the Cavaliers rallied to close 24-22. The Dukes held set points at 24-23 and 25-24 before the Cavs broke a 27-27 tie with a kill by sophomore Kendahl Voelker followed by a JMU attack error.
In the second set, JMU held a commanding 20-14 lead only to see a four-point Virginia rally cut it to two points. With the score at 23-21, JMU got a kill from sophomore Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) and a Virginia attack error for the win.
After a pair of close sets to knot the score at 1-1, it was all Virginia in the next two sets. The Cavaliers pulled away from a 19-17 lead to score six of the next eight points for the 25-19 win in set three. They carried the momentum into the final set, building a 13-6 lead and never looking back for the 25-16 win.
Senior Beth Shelton had a match-high 19 kills with a .375 attack percentage along with nine digs. Voelker added 10 kills. Bruneau had 36 assists, five digs, and three blocks. Junior Brittani Rendina led all players with 18 digs.
