WOODSTOCK, Ga., March 6, 2010 - No. 12 Georgia Tech hit three home runs and Tennessee Tech picked up a pair of two-out runs as the James Madison softball team dropped two games at the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex in Woodstock, Ga. on Saturday. The Dukes lost the first game 2-1 to Tennessee Tech, while Georgia Tech won game two 11-0 in six innings.
The Dukes fell to 2-2 in the tournament and 7-6 overall, while TTU improved to 7-6 and the Yellow Jackets upped their record to 14-2.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the top of the third inning of game two with a pair of two-out runs. Reigning Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week, Jen Yee kicked things off with a one-out single up the middle. Designated player Hope Rush and first baseman Kristine Priebe loaded the bases on back-to-back singles, before pitcher Kristine Adkins helped her own cause with a sacrifice fly to center. A two-out single by Danielle Dike gave Georgia Tech a 2-0 lead.
Dike broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning, launching a three-run home run to left field to open up a 6-0 lead. Yee led off the inning with a single up the middle, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch by junior right-hander Heather Widner (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Ready). A Rush walk and a ground-out by Priebe put two runners in scoring position with one out. Yee scored on a fielder's choice before Dike's three-run blast cleared the bases.
The Yellow Jackets hit two more home runs in a five-run sixth inning, that forced the game into the eight-run early-termination rule. Back-to-back one-out walks by right-hander Olivia McPherson (Liberty, N.C./Southern Alamance) setup a three-run shot by Rush, before Dike capped off her day with a two-run blast.
Dike finished 3-for-4 with two home runs and six RBI, while Rush was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI. Yee reached base four times for Georgia Tech, going 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs scored and two stolen bases.
Adkins took care of the rest for the Jackets, throwing a two-hit shutout to improve to 4-0. The junior walked one and struck out none in six innings of work.
Freshman center fielder Jasmine Butler (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange) was 1-for-3 with a single and senior left fielder Brittney Dyson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) went 1-for-2 for the two JMU hits.
Freshman right-hander Cara Stecher
