ELKTON, Md., March 16, 2013 - The James
Madison men's tennis team battled more than strong competition on Saturday as
the Dukes defeated conference-foe Delaware 5-2 and moved
to 4-6 overall and 2-0 against Colonial Athletic Association schools. The Blue Hens fell to 2-5 this season.
The match was originally scheduled to be played in Newark, Del., at the Delaware Field House at 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Bad weather, however, forced the squads to relocate to the Elkton Indoor Tennis Courts in Elkton, Md., and play at 7 p.m. Saturday evening.
In doubles play, JMU took the point after going 2-1 against the Blue Hens. The Dukes then picked up four wins in singles play.
Senior Ryan Pool (Melbourne, Australia/Braemar (Chattanooga)) and freshman Robert Stirling (Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) won 8-6 over Troy Beneck and Adam Lawton at the No. 1 position. Seniors Bastien Russo (Lyon, France/Notre Dame des Minimes (Shorter)) and Florent Sentenac (Borderes, France/Lycee Theophile Gautier (Auburn Montgomery)) battled for the 9-7 victory over Mike Furr and Jason Derene at the No. 3 position.
Pool, Stirling and Sentenac all picked up victories in singles play as well. At the No. 1 position, Pool defeated Beneck 6-3, 7-6(4) for his sixth dual victory this spring. Stirling tallied his fifth victory of the spring with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Furr at the No. 4 position.
Sentenac worked for his victory against Evan Andrews, coming from behind to the take the point in three sets at the No. 5 position. Andrews grabbed set one behind a 7-6(6) performance before Sentenac won sets two and three 6-4.
Senior Hugo Ramadier (Paris, France/Lycee Francais Chateabriand (Northern Arizona)) notched his own comeback point as he won in three sets in the No. 3 position. Nolan Gelman took a 1-0 lead with a 6-2 victory in set one, but Ramadier defeated him in the next two sets (6-2, 6-3) to take the win.
JMU will now travel to Longwood for a 2:30 p.m. match-up on Friday, March 22. The Dukes were originally scheduled to face Drexel on Sunday, March 17, but the match has been postponed due to weather.
