HARRISONBURG, Va., March 8, 2014 – Nationally-ranked Seton Hall scored nine runs in the first three innings on its way to a 15-4 win over James Madison in a non-conference baseball game Saturday at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.
The Dukes dropped to 6-7 overall, while the 22nd-ranked Pirates improved to 8-2 with their seventh-straight win.
Seton Hall starter Josh Prevost stayed unbeaten at 4-0, giving up four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six in eight innings of work. Junior right-hander Patrick Toohers (Florham Park, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) took the loss for JMU.
Senior third baseman Ty McFarland (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) hit a solo home run for JMU in the bottom of the seventh inning. He drove it off the batter's eye in center field for his Colonial Athletic Association-leading sixth home run of the season. He is also the league leader in slugging percentage (.768), runs scored (19) and total bases (43).
McFarland, junior center field Kevin Husum (Panama City, Fla./Bay) and sophomore shortstop Kyle Weston (Penn Laird, Va./Spotswood) each had two of JMU's eight hits.
Third baseman Kyle Grimm paced Seton Hall's potent offensive attack, going 4-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored. First baseman Sal Annunziata roped three doubles and drove in four runs from the cleanup spot, while right fielder Chris Selden tallied three singles, one RBI and three runs. Shortstop D.J. Ruhlman hit a solo home run and doubled.
The Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Grimm singled in the lone run. Toohers limited the damage with back-to-back strikeouts with the bases loaded.
The Dukes tied it with a run in the bottom half of the first. Husum led off the inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on an overthrow by the catcher. Senior second baseman Conner Brown (Richmond, Va./Godwin) knocked in the run with an opposite-field single to right field.
Seton Hall broke the tie and pulled away early with four runs in both the second and third innings. The eight runs came on eight hits and two errors.
Trailing 11-1, JMU struck for a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Senior right fielder Tyler Gregory (Dothan, Ala./Houston Academy) hit a one-out double and then scored on a double by Weston. Weston would eventually score on a two-out single by Husum.
The teams will play Sunday to continue the three-game series and will wrap things up with game three on Monday. Both games are scheduled for 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.
