HARRISONBURG, Va. – This season, the James Madison women's soccer team is celebrating 25 years of excellence on the field. On August 13, JMU head coach Dave Lombardo, the only coach in program history, announced his 25th Anniversary team featuring several players that have left a lasting impact on the program beyond their four years at JMU.
Every two weeks leading up to the 25th Anniversary celebration game, a 7 p.m. match Friday, Oct. 24, against William & Mary, one position group will be highlighted.
This week's spotlight is on the three goalkeepers – Stacey Bilodeau, Jess Hussey and Diane Wszalek.
"Over the years, we have been very fortunate to have very strong goalkeeping at JMU," Lombardo said. "These three are the best of the best. All three have provided us opportunities to win CAA championships and advance deep into NCAA Tournament play."
Stacey Bilodeau was a goalkeeper for the Dukes from 1994-97. In her time at JMU, she went to three NCAA Tournaments and earned All-CAA honors in 1996 and 1997. Near the end of her sophomore season in 1995, Bilodeau was named the CAA Tournament MVP, where she helped the Dukes lock up their first conference championship title.
In addition to All-CAA and CAA Tournament honors, Bilodeau was named a VaSID All-State performer in 1995 and 1996. Overall, Bilodeau is tied for second in program history for total shutouts (29), fourth on the all-time saves list (300) and complete game shutouts (9) and sixth in goals against average (1.45) in 75 games played. Bilodeau holds the school record for most saves made in a season with 132, which she set in 1995. At the time, she set the school record for most saves in a game by recording 14 saves twice against William & Mary on October 28, 2005, then again on November 5, 2005. The mark has previously been tied but never broken.
Jess Hussey played between the pipes for JMU from 2002-05, making two career NCAA Tournament appearances along the way. She holds the school record for most career saves with 370 and set the original school mark of most shutouts in a season when she posted eight clean sheets in 2002 before Diane Wszalek matched the number in 2010. Hussey set the school record for most games played by a goalkeeper with 85, as well as the most starts by a goalkeeper, which sits at 84.
At the conclusion of her senior season, Hussey was named an All-CAA performer, and was named to the NSCAA All-Region team and VaSID All-State team. Hussey also played for the Canada Under-19 National Team in 2002 and the Under-20 Canadian National Team in 2003. With the Under-19 team, she won the silver medal at the FIFA Under-19 World Championship.
Diane Wszalek is the most recent goalkeeper of the three to play for the Dukes, minding the net from 2006-2010. During her redshirt senior season in 2010, she earned NSCAA All-Region, VaSID All-State, All-CAA and CAA Tournament MVP honors. Wszalek holds the school records for most complete game shutouts with 24, the most total shutouts with 30 and the best goals against average in program history, a 1.128 mark. She also holds the school record for the longest scoreless streak, which lasted 501:44.
Next up on the list are the nine defenders that were named to the team, which will be highlighted on Thursday, Sept. 25.
