James Madison will welcome its newest class into the Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, November 20. As we approach induction day, JMUSports.com will feature members of the new class each week.
Today's article highlights our final inductee for Friday night, swimming and diving's Cynthia Anne Walker-Marstellar
Cynthia Anne Walker-Marstellar
Â
Representing the Dukes from 1989 to 1993, Cynthia Walker brought much success to the women's swimming program. Walker led JMU to the 1993 CAA Championship title, as well as three straight runner-up finishes.
Â
Walker was twice named the CAA Outstanding Swimmer, at the 1992 and 1993 championship meets, making her the only JMU athlete to ever win this award. She was also named the league's Swimmer of the Year in 1993.
Â
At the 1993 CAA Championship meet, Walker placed first in all of her events, earning the highest possible point total for JMU. She earned 14 CAA gold medals throughout her career, including three times in the 50-yard freestyle, twice in the 100-yard freestyle and once in the 100-yard butterfly. She held eight JMU and seven CAA records. Her 100 fly record-best time of 56.82 stood as the mark to beat at JMU for 17 years.
Â
Walker was selected in 2009 to the CAA Silver Anniversary Team and joins Dorothy Harris ('53) and Maria Grosz-Pope ('81) as the third women's swimmer inducted into the JMU Athletics Hall of Fame.Â
