HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – James Madison snapped its three-game losing streak with a 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association volleyball triumph (19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-22) at Hofstra Saturday night at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
The Dukes improved to 22-6 overall, remain in first place in the CAA with a 12-3 mark and swept the season series against the Pride, who fell to 18-10 and 9-4.
Junior right-side hitter Janey Goodman led the Dukes with a match-high 20 kills and nine blocks. Senior setter Sarah Patterson dished out 36 assists, to go with seven kills, as she helped the Dukes to a .257 team hitting percentage. Freshman middle Taylor Gail led the match with 10 block assists, while sophomore libero Taylor Austin led the backline with 24 digs. The Dukes dominated play at the net, holding a 16-5 advantage in blocks.
After dropping the first set, JMU broke away from a 15-15 tie with a 3-0 run, sparked by a kill and block by Goodman. The Dukes maintained the lead the remainder of the set extending the lead to 23-20. Patterson fought off a Hofstra comeback, ending the set with a kill.
In set three, the Dukes broke away from another tie at the 6-6 mark, winning four straight points, led by server senior Sierra Hahn-Ventrell. Hofstra rallied back and took a brief lead at 21-20 but Madison surged ahead with a 5-1 run to take the frame 25-22 and maintain a 2-1 match lead.
Tied at 8-8 in the fourth, JMU used a 6-1 run to take control at 14-9. Following a timeout late in the set, the Pride won six of seven points closing the gap to one at 20-19. The Dukes scored three in a row, capped off by a pair of blocks but the Pride came right back with three points of their own to make it 23-22. A Goodman kill put the Dukes on match point and they closed things out as she and Gail blocked a Hofstra attack to take the set 25-22.
JMU limited Hofstra to a .184 hitting percentage as the hosts committed 31 attack errors. HU was paced by Leticia Valente, who finished with 18 kills.
