This is the last of 10 previews--one for each everyday position, one for starting pitching and one for the bullpen--that have run in the weeks leading up to the Diamond Dukes' 2015 season opener against Buffalo in Boiling Springs, N.C.Â
BULLPENÂ
When the JMU coaching staff looks at the Diamond Dukes bullpen, they point to an abundance of youth and potential, as well as remarkable depth and versatility.
Â
"It may not be a strength yet, just because we have some unproven guys," Assistant Coach
Ted White said. "But, in my mind, we're as strong in the bullpen as we've been since I've gotten here."
Â
White looks to a pair of returners as the leaders of the bullpen, so to speak, in sophomore left-hander
Michael Evans and senior righty
Ben Garner.
Â
Evans will likely see relief time early, as the coaching staff considered moving him to a starting role for 2015. In his first collegiate season, Evans worked through some growing pains to develop into one of the Dukes' most trusted relief arms, at one point stringing together nine innings of relief with just two earned runs, including a big two-inning save in a 3-2 win over Northeastern.
Â
Garner, who has what the staff considers to be the best stuff in the bullpen, has proven himself to be a consistent contributor over his three seasons in Harrisonburg. Last year, the Burke, Va. native tallied 18.0 innings in 11 appearances, posting a 3.00 ERA before going down with an injury.
Â
A trio of newcomers in freshmen
Colton Harlow,
Steven Schwartz and
Eric Yankey will also be called upon out of the bullpen.
Â
Harlow, from nearby Stonewall Jackson, impressed the coaches during the fall season with his attitude and fearlessness. The young lefty wrapped up his standout prep career in Mount Jackson, Va. with All-District and All-Region honors as a senior.
Â
Schwartz also made his mark during fall practice, as the 6-4, 210-pound righty comes to Harrisonburg fresh off of Conference 7 Pitcher of the Year honors at Annandale. Yankey, a local product out of Turner Ashby, captured his own prep plaudits, grabbing the Conference 29 Pitcher of the Year award after a senior campaign that saw him strike out a staggering 123 batters in 75.2 innings.
Â
Freshman
Andrew Scarpelli will also see work in relief, as will redshirt sophomores
Trey Jones and
Brandon Withers. Senior
Kevin Husum, the starter in right field, and sophomore
Logan Corrigan will also provide bullpen depth in addition to their everyday duties.
Â
The Dukes open the 2015 season on Friday, Feb. 13 when they travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on Buffalo at 12 p.m. and Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m. Season ticket packages for all 29 home games start at $40, with Family Plans as low as $80.
