HARRISONBURG, Virginia -- For the third time in four matches, the James Madison lacrosse team opened with at least seven straight goals, this time scoring the first 13 in a 22-5 win over Elon in Colonial Athletic Association action, April 10. With the victory, the Dukes moved to 10-4 and 2-1 in the CAA, while the Phoenix dropped to 7-6 and 0-3 in their first year in the league as JMU Head Coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe picked up her 100th JMU victory and 150th career win on the night.
The Dukes were strong on both ends of the field, building a 15-1 lead at halftime through solid defense. JMU forced 12 Elon turnovers and limited the Phoenix to just a single shot on goal in the period. Madison dominated on draw controls 12-5 and also held an 11-7 advantage on ground balls. For the match, JMU outshot the visitors 36-7, including going 3-for-3 on the man advantage, and was able to hold Elon to just 3-of-12 on clear attempts overall.Â
Senior attacker Stephanie Finley led all scorers with four goals and four assists for eight points, with 11 different JMU players getting goals on the night. That included sophomore attacker Margaret Tucker Fogarty with her first goal of the season and sophomore attacker Cristina McCarthy with her first career hat trick. Elon had five different players score its goals on the night.
The Dukes will have the next week off before hosting two more CAA games at University Park. The weekend starts with a Friday, April 17 tilt at 5 p.m. against defending league champion Towson and then hosting Delaware on Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m. , Â
