NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior
Carol Strock won the individual ECAC Championship for the second consecutive year, leading James Madison cross country to a dominant team title at Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday morning.
Strock ran the 5K course through the Bronx in 18:03, 18 seconds faster than second-place Megan McGarrity of Rider. She is the seventh runner in JMU history to capture the individual ECAC title, but the first to win back-to-back years. This is the first time the Dukes have had a gold medal winner two years in a row since
Katie Harman and
Katie Gorman won in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
JMU used four top-10 finishes to collect 32 points and clinch the team championship, 36 points ahead of second-place Holy Cross. This is the sixth ECAC team title for JMU, and the first since 2012.
Three Dukes finished in succession from fifth through seventh. Senior
Tessa Mundell finished in 18:35 for fifth, her best ECAC placement in her fourth time racing. Sophomore
Olivia Viparina followed closely in sixth 18:37, and junior
